Diamonds and Hearts

Leelee’s words are supposed to make me want to settle with Daddy. Well, I’m through. He’s had years to get some act right. After Leelee drops me off, I come back to the park in Ashford. I sit on the swing and stare across the street at one house in particular. There’s a seven year old me dragging my daddy outside. He’s pretending to be tired after a long day’s work.

For a moment I can hear him calling me, “Bugga Rock,” the words float through the wind. We head over, he makes a few more half-hearted, joking complaints and then my old life is on the swing beside me.

Being here is supposed to help me, but I end up crying. The next thing I know, I’m calling Isaac.

“Hey, babe,” he answers. “I was getting ready to call you. My mom and dad are having a film night and they are in love with you.”

“Can you meet me at the park first?”

He’s here in record timing. The Audi isn’t even at the curb as he gets out and comes to me. There’s concern all over his face. Then I melt in his hug, until he lets me go and starts inspecting me.

“Aubrey, what’s wrong?”

As we sit in the swings, I tell him as much as I can. “Before Daddy became an alcoholic, we lived in that house.” I stare at the house across the street, hoping Isaac misconstrues the pressures of life for Daddy’s come up. “When I was little, my Daddy used to come home from work and bring me a charm. Cute little diamond charms from Bella’s Jeweler for my charm bracelet. He did it every once in a while…”

The next morning, I’m beyond surprised when we’re walking around Ashford Square after school and step into Bella’s Jewelers. “Are you buying your mom something for Christmas?”

“Nope.”

I can hear him, but my eyes are seeing diamonds and he might as well be speaking Swahili. I stop at a princess cut engagement ring and lust takes over.

“It’s apple cider,” Isaac says, and I finally notice the glass he hands me. And the jeweler is staring at me all happy.

“I thought about waiting for Christmas, but you’ve been so sad about your Dad. So pick anything that you want,” he stirs me away from the engagement rings.

“Isaac, you can’t buy me anything in here.”

“Technically, my allowance can buy you anything from here…,” he points to a glass display. “To there. But, if you keep getting chummy with my parents, I’m sure they’ll let you start a credit plan for those engagement rings you were looking for–”

“Your parents?”

“Bell Jewelers. Funny story, my mom wanted to add the ‘a’ and give it more finesse.”

Bella Jewelers…Whhhaaattt???

“After yesterday you deserved this.”

“But you can’t.” When all is said and done, I don’t want him to think I used him. Never mind the shopping, diamonds are different, and I’m starting to like him.

“We have just a few left.”

“We’re good right?”

“Not yet.
