Stretching her aching muscles, she gazed at Joao, the image tugging at her resolve to be strong. Stitches had been placed to stem the flow of blood from where his head had made contact with the bull, his eye beneath swollen and purple, the ventilation tube protruding from his mouth. The arm opposite her was swathed in bandages and strapping to keep it immobile, not that there was much chance of him moving. The entire time she had been there, the only motion had been the steady rise and fall of his chest. Something that her eyes were drawn to time and again, as if pulled to reassure her that he was still in there somewhere.

Suddenly, shrill beeps erupted from the monitor Joao was hooked up to, ominously similar to those in the ambulance. Clutching his hand, she wildly looked around for assistance. The alarm spiked her fear that something was deathly wrong. Dropping his hand, she bolted through the curtains, screaming for help, only to be confronted with medical staff pouring into the corridor. She rushed back to the room, fearful that she would be excluded if she remained outside, only just squeezing herself into a corner before a nurse efficiently closed the curtain. The only words that Gabi could make out were blood pressure plummeting, heart rate and, alarmingly, code red. More medical stuff piled into the room and, without a glance in her direction, the sides of his bed were pulled up, the IV attached to the bed frame and, with the brake released, Joao was wheeled out of the room and through foreboding doors.

“No, no, no,” Gabi muttered frantically, shaking her head. “Don’t you dare do this to me again, Joao Rojas!” Helpless tears welled, her bottom lip quivering. She glanced around and, spying a nurses’ station, she hurried over. “Excuse me, where did they just take Joao Rojas?” she asked a tired looking nurse, the fluorescent lighting unkind to her.

“He was the patient that just had the code red?” the nurse asked, her professional tone belying the kind sympathetic look she gave Gabi.

“Yes, I think they mentioned that.”

“A code red usually means that an operating room needs to be prepped. But let’s see what I have on the computer.” Her fingers were quick across the keyboard. “Yes, as I thought, he’s been taken to surgery. That’s all the information I have for now, I’m sorry. I will have a doctor come and talk to you as soon as someone is free.”

Tears slid down Gabi’s ashen cheeks. “Um, thank you,” her voice cracked.

Calm eyes that had seen human loss and pain many times in her career softened in empathy. “If you like, you can wait in the visitor’s lounge. I will make sure you are kept informed.”

Gabi nodded, powerless to find words against the hard lump of fear that filled her to the core. Head down, she shuffled off in the direction the nurse had indicated.
