Chapter 25

I’m caught in the princess’s menacing stare, knowing Lord Thalore’s attention is responsible. Once again, I attempt to pull away.

The handsome fae lord turns the movement into a clumsy spin, and I stumble into his muscular chest. Without missing a beat, he adjusts his hold and begins to lead me in a new dance.

I huff an annoyed breath and focus my attention over his shoulder. One of my hands is held gently in Lord Thalore’s. The other rests on his bicep. I try not to admire the strength I feel beneath my fingers.

“Whispers have reached my ears.”

Knowing curious eyes are watching our every move, I refrain from rolling my eyes at his intentionally vague statement. “That’s nice.”

I keep my attention on the other couples on the crowded dance floor. Many return my attention—some with polite smiles. Others with knowing smirks which I ignore. The princess is no longer in sight, but I feel her hatred burning into the exposed skin on my back from wherever she is.

Lord Thalore hums an amused sound. “Apparently, General Wilm was forced to intervene when your former lover threatened to castrate any solider who decides to try and pursue you romantically.”

Of course, he did.

I was a fool to believe Tony and I had turned a page our first day in Avedon, and I still haven’t come up with a way to get him to stop being so jealous and possessive.

“That sounds less like whispers, and more like a first-hand account from your friend.” I’m careful to keep my voice barely above a whisper.

Cool emerald eyes brush against my cheek. “Tony’s actions are growing bolder.”

“I’m aware.” I remember how Tony acted when Prince Gerald and I were speaking in the armory. He had some nerve being rude to the lycan royal. And now to fae soldiers?

Tony’s actions are reckless, and they will cause nothing but trouble.

“His behavior threatens your participation in the betrothal contest.”

My eyes finally snap up and lock with the lord’s. “What? Why?”

Lord Thalore guides me into a single spin when the music crests. He brings me back into his frame. “The discontent stirred by Guardian Walsh’s behavior is not conducive to a functioning royal guard.”

“So kick him out of the contest,” I retort. “I’m not doing anything wrong.” I’m not responsible for Tony's actions. This is some sexist bullsh—

“I know you aren’t,” Lord Thalore’s reply cuts off the thought. “And trust me, I won’t let anyone remove you from the contest. I only mention it to you because I am concerned, and I wanted to ask if there is anything I should know about you and Tony?”

I lift a brow. “Like what?”

“Like why Guardian Walsh acts as if you are his mate.”

I nearly choke when I hear the last word. It’s been explained to me that fae, similar to supernaturals in our realm, can have soulmates. Like, literal soulmates. The two individuals are drawn together by whatever force oversees the universe. For them, it is impossible to deny the connection.

That is absolutely not what is happening between me and my ex.
