5. Nouns with two genders

• l’après-midi (the afternoon) can be masculine or feminine

un bel après-midi (or: une belle après-midi)

a beautiful afternoon

tout l’après-midi (or: toute l’après-midi)

all afternoon

• les gens (the people)

– is usually masculine plural

– is feminine plural when an adjective which has a distinctive feminine form directly precedes the word gens

But:

tous les braves gens

all decent people

Ces jeunes gens sont amusants.

These young people are funny.
