But globalisation has not benefited everyone. Many communities feel they no longer control some aspects of their lives. They feel they are sacrificing too much for the greater good. Part of this is due to the recent migration of refugees and the global financial crisis. The anti-globalisation sentiment around the world has also led to movements such as Occupy Wall Street and the intensity of the debate has staged numerous protests at meetings of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the European Union (EU), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Economic Forum (WEF), the G8 and G20.

Those who oppose globalisation say it has led to considerable negative changes including:

the economic dominance of powers such as the USA, the European Union and China. Although poorer nations benefit in terms of trade and job opportunities, globalisation has done little to close the gap between the very poor and the very rich

the economic dominance of multinational corporations has been blamed for exploitation and economic opportunism in cheap labour and poor working conditions, such as ‘sweat shops’ in under-developed countries

the drain of skilled people from poor countries to rich

the introduction of fast food and poor diets to poor countries although the consequent reduction of health standards is compensated for by better healthcare

economic vulnerability created by linking economies; during the global financial crisis systemic problems in a few regions led to a global collapse of financial markets

the treatment of jobs in developed countries where local jobs may be lost to lower cost labour from underdeveloped countries and this affected many

the loss of cultural and social values in developing countries due to the dominance of developed countries

environmental degradation, particularly deforestation and land clearing, which leads to the removal of habitat of many endangered animals

easier spread of diseases

easier trade of drugs and illicit goods.
