Chapter Four:

The Missing

Steph Young

T he reader may recall Dan saying: ‘When going over missing person and strange drowning cases like that of Zachary Marr, Kayelyn Louder, Patricia Meehan and many others, I wonder if these disappearances have a deeper paranormal dimension to them. Were their minds somehow hijacked before they went missing? Was I selected to be the subject of a similar story that would remain unsolved? ’ Are any of the following cases also instances where they found themselves selected?

28-year-old Michael Boyette disappeared in October 2007, in Mobil County. He had been acting out of character prior to his disappearance. It was possible that he was experiencing mental health issues and his family said he did have drug problems. He ran into the woods near his house on Rainbow Lake Road in Grand Bay, and he never returned.

A father of two young children, Lt Paul Burch of the Mobil Sheriff’s office said of him: “Earlier in the day, before he ran off into the woods, he’d told his family he was going to “go back where it all started.” Despite many official and voluntary searches of woods and the neighbourhood, they could not find him anywhere, and he has never been found.

About a week before he disappeared, Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a pursuit with Boyette, when they responded to an attempted suicide complaint. His family said he had thoughts of suicide in the past, but if he had committed suicide, his body would have surely been found? If he is still alive, he has never contacted his family. What did he mean, that he wanted to “go back to where it all started?” Why did he run into the woods?

In April 2004, Jeremy Alex was last was seen running into the woods off Pound Hill Road in Northport, Waldo County, Maine. Prior to this, he had emerged from the woods into the back yard of James and Cynthia Munkelt. Mrs. Munkelt told police the young man was “clutching a wad of money” in one hand and told her, "Bad guys are after me. Don't call the cops.”

She phoned the police regardless, out of concern for his welfare. He was distraught, she said, and appeared to be hallucinating. She also recognised him as a former student at the school where she used to work.

Her husband approached him when he appeared in their backyard. Alex told him that bad men were chasing him and were out to get him – but Mr. Munkett could see no sign of these men. He said Alex offered him the bundle of cash to let him go – Munkett was holding on to him, trying to keep him there for his own safety and well-being. But much as he tried to calm the young man down, Alex broke free from his grip and ran back into the woods. Munkett said he appeared to be paranoid and terrified.

That was the last time anyone saw him. Waldo County Detective Jason Trundy said that Alex appeared to recognize the Munketts one minute and not know who they were the next.
