DECEMBER 19TH
âGood morning!â Taylor beams at the door first thing in the morning.
Literally, Iâve made it as far as the bathroom and the bottom of the stairs since getting out of bed only a few minutes ago.
The cold air sweeps in the house as Taylor comes inside. She hands me a folded newspaper thatâs clearly already been read.
âThis is for you,â she says.
I put a finger to my lips and nod my head back toward Stephâs bedroom. âSheâs still sleeping.â
âOh. Sorry. I just wanted to drop this off on my way in to work.â
In the back of my mind, I vaguely remember that today is Monday. Thankfully, Iâm on vacation and that little detail doesnât really matter to me.
âI think itâs a nice gesture to deliver the local newspaper to the house, but I donât want to subscribe to the house specifically,â she says. âNot everyone reads the paper and I donât always have the house booked, so itâd be a waste.â
Opening it, I peek inside at the headlines. âThanks.â
âThere might not be anything in there that interests you, but there are some local activities that are listed. Sorry itâs the Saturday paper, so itâs a few days old. We get it first at our house and then I bring it here. The paper isnât published on Sundays or Mondays, so I guess this is still the latest copy.â
I nod. âOkay. Iâll check it out.â
âHow are things going? Everything okay?â
Ah, the real reason she came. âNot bad, actually. Weâve been getting along pretty well.â
Taylor breathes a sigh of relief. âOh good! I was kind of worried when I left you both on Saturday.â She points to the tree by the window. âThat looks nice. Did you go to get that together?â
âWe did, yeah. It was fun. This trip might not be so bad.â
She smiles. âIâm so happy about that. Well, I should be off. I donât want to intrude on your vacation anymore than I have to. Give me a call if you need anything. I only live five minutes away.â
Just as quickly as she came, sheâs gone.
I make my way to the kitchen, fix myself a cup of coffee, and idly look over the newspaper while I wait for my cup to fill. In the âLifestylesâ section is a calendar list of events. One in particular catches my eye and I weigh my options.
We donât have anything planned for today, but isnât that the point of this vacation? Relaxation? Would Steph even be open to the idea of doing something with me? Would she be annoyed if I made plans for the two of us? Would she think there was some other intention behind it? Is there?
My coffee finishes brewing and I turn to retrieve the cup. Itâs nearly eight oâclock and Steph still isnât up yet. I decide to jump in the shower first so maybe I can enjoy breakfast with her.
I grab my cup of coffee and start to leave the room, but circle back and grab the newspaper.
