CHAPTER 22
When we arrived at Mrs. Washington's estate, nothing could have prepared us for the massiveness of her ranch farm. Even George, our driver, was in awe. It was beautiful. The estate set on 10 acres of land surrounded by nothing but distinct beauty. Upon entering the gates, we were able to drive through the long driveway that was surrounded by beautiful manicured grass, and waterfalls. On the right side of the estate, there was a barn and some cattle and horses. They were either eating or exploring the beautiful terrain. I saw a man with a cowboy hat tending to some of the cattle. He was tall and looked quite familiar.
"Now this is wealth," Hakeem said. His eyes told it all as he observed Mrs. Washington's property. The property sat about forty-five minutes outside of Houston. It was secluded but heavily secured. There was security everywhere, and I could only imagine that it tightened since Darryl had died.
"It sure is. Southern Pecans has been very kind to Mrs. Washington," I said.
After finally arriving towards the front of the large house, a middle-aged man came to greet us at the car. George rolled our windows down so that the man could speak to us.
The man smiled brightly with pearly white teeth. "Welcome to Mrs. Washington's estate. She has been expecting you both."
"Thank you," we both said in unison. The man then opened our car door. As we got out, we gave George a quick tip before he drove off.
"Follow me," the man said as he started walking up towards the stairway to the house. It was made of brick, which I thought was pretty impressive. Vinyl siding was the top choice for housing designs nowadays. It was pretty refreshing to see something different. "By the way, my name is Nicholas,â the man said as he continue leading us up the stairway.
"Nice to meet you, Nicholas," I said.
"Same here," Hakeem joined in. We followed Nicholas until he got to the front door. Once he opened the door, he let us inside only for us to be awed again. The house was elegant but yet had a comfy feel. It didn't feel like a museum-like some of those celebrities' homes where you would be scared even to touch one thing, but it felt comfortable, down to earth, even in all its elegance. Upon coming upon the foyer, the ceilings were very high, and Mrs. Washington had a beautiful theme of royal purple and white that seemed to dominate the theme of the house.
"This is extravagant," Hakeem said.
I nodded in approval. It was nice. After leading us through the foyer, we were then led into another room. The room was also massive, and it was designed like a tea room. Mrs. Washington had been sitting at the table with a cup of what I assumed tea in her hands. She was wearing a green and brown dress, and her hair was nice and neat like it had been when I had first met her, but as good as she looked, her eyes told another story.
