Chapter Four

Justin must have dozed off because the doorbell woke him out of a deep and satisfied dream state. Who the hell kept ringing that damned bell? He looked back at Becca, but she was conked out. The jet lag and a marathon sex session put her as far under as it had him.

The bell rang again.

“Christ,” he muttered, stalking naked to the bathroom to grab a robe. When he saw the tub, it clicked for him. “Milady’s bubble bath,” he said. Sounded like a perfect way to relax this evening. He should have had Abbie get some candles too. Maybe he’d send her out again, if it wasn’t too late. What time was it anyway?

He didn’t want to shock his secretary with his bare knees, so he took the chain off the door and stood behind it as he opened it. “Did you find it all right?” he asked. But before he could reach around the door, someone shoved it hard and he sprawled back a step.

“I don’t believe you!” His mother strode through the door and slammed it behind her.

“No,” Justin said, shaking his head. “You can’t be here. You need to leave, right now.”

She shoved a bag of bubble bath at him. “I stopped by the office just as Abigail was about to deliver these to your wife.” She sneered the last two words. “By the way, I’m pretty sure that’s her underwear in the bag too.”

Justine closed his eyes. This was a nightmare. That was the only explanation. He was still sleeping, and the curry must have turned and that’s why she was here in his dreams. He pried open one of his eyes. Nope. She was still standing there, arms akimbo, glaring at him.

“Thank you, mother,” he said, trying for a modicum of dignity. “I’m sorry you had to come out of your way. This is what I pay Abby for, you know.”

“I had hoped you had come to your senses,” she said. “The whole family is laughing at you behind your back.”

Justin rubbed his hand over his face. “Good. Some of those old sour pusses could use a good laugh.”

“This isn’t funny. That woman is making a fool out of you.”

“That woman is my wife,” he said, holding on to his temper, but just barely. Justin had to get her out of here before Becca woke up. Things were still too new for them to have to go through this bullshit again.

“She struck me.”

“Yeah, well to be honest, you kind of deserved it.”

“Justin!” she shrieked.

Oh, did he say that aloud? He needed to get a grip before her mother became completely unhinged. “Mother, you’re obviously not happy with my marriage.”

“What was your first clue?” she said, seething.

“And I understand that in a warped way, it comes from a place of love.”

His mother frowned at him. She had obviously been expecting a fight. Justin was hoping not to give her one.

“But I love Becca and she loves me. Your disapproval is not going to change that, and I’m not going to let your vitriol come between us again.
