A DIRECTIONAL BURST OF RADIANT ENERGY?

If the image on the Turin Shroud was indeed formed as a result of a burst of radiant energy, then we should be able to do some detective work to find information about the characteristics of this burst by studying the image. The first thing that we find is that it would have to have been directional. If the body had “shone” equally in all directions, then there would have been no clearly defined image of the man on the cloth. To recap, we can consider the image on the Shroud (plate 11) by visualizing the cloth wrapped over the top of the head and hanging down over the front and back of the body. I have been to Turin to three of the expositions of the Shroud. When you look at the Shroud as it is displayed, stretched out as a flat sheet, you can see the image of the front of the body and of the back. There is no image in between the two where the cloth would have been over the top of his head when the image formed. There is a water stain between the two images but no image of the top of the head. If you imagine a hypothetical burst of radiation from the body occurring in all directions, then there would be image formation at the top of the head, and also the image would have been very diffuse as it would have been expected to result from radiation spread out all over the cloth.

It would therefore seem that if the image was formed by a radiant burst from the body, the burst would have to have been projected in one axis only, forward and backward, as it were. The physicist John Jackson has postulated a hypothesis to explain this that suggests that the recumbent corpse dematerialized, producing radiation as it did so, and that the cloth that had been covering the front of the body collapsed downward as a result of gravity through the space where the body had been and that the image was imprinted on it as it collapsed through the resulting field of radiant energy.51 This would be consistent with the directional nature of the radiation, although, as I have stated elsewhere in this book, there is further evidence that suggests that at the moment of image formation, the body was actually upright rather than supine.14, 50

One criticism that is often mentioned about the hypothesis of directional radiation concerns the distance coding in the image. This distance coding was first discovered by Jackson in the 1970s; this means that the intensity of the image depends on the distance there would have been between the cloth and the body, so that, for example, parts of the body that would have been closer to the cloth, such as the nose and the hands, have a higher intensity of image formation than parts that would have been farther away.52 This is consistent with something known as
