Chapter 5 – Reunited
“Ayo Fish,” Bert said, peering down at me as I stared at the ceiling from my top bunk from the jail I had inhabited over the past eight months. “You good up there?”
I glanced over at Bert, whose beady eyes were studying me with a wariness she only expressed when worried about me. “I’m good.”
“You figured out what you gon’ do tomorrow?”
Running a hand over my cornrows, I realized I spent so much time thinking about tomorrow coming that I didn’t think about what I would do or say when it came. “I haven’t got a clue, Bert.”
Bert nodded her head in understanding, her ponytail of dreads bopping up and down. If only the rest of the cellblock could see her playing the supportive friend. They’d probably die of shock since Bert was the head of the Black Widows, a prison gang that terrorized the entire jail through forceful intimidation by way of jumping, bullying, and shanking if necessary. Standing at well over six feet tall with a muscular build most men would kill for, Bert was known for two things: her callous nature and the rate at which she collected women. When I entered the facility I was warned that I would be made into a trophy like many of the other newbies. I supposed it would’ve happened if not for everything I’d been through. Bert got her kicks out of breaking girls and claiming them. Her plans were moot because I was already broken.

I had been humiliated through the entire intake process. Stripped naked and made to squat in front of another woman and cough. Jail looked horrible on television already; being there, feeling the violence and depression exuding from the walls was enough to bring tears to my eyes. Going in and knowing I wasn’t coming out felt like a crippling blow, a gut punch I would never be able to recover from.
“Here’s where you’ll be staying,” a muscular female CO said as we arrived in front of a cell no larger than my closet back at home. The woman opened the door and barked, “Bert, be nice to this one. We can’t afford to send another one into PC.”
One hard shove later I was locked inside of the cell with Bert, who had appeared from behind the bunk bed holding a magazine which she tossed aside once she got a good look at me. I fought every instinct that told me to run because the reality was that I had nowhere to go; it was just Bert, me, and the 11 by 14 foot cell we were sharing. Assessing the situation, I took on an air of nonchalance like I’d been locked up for murder plenty times.
“What up, fish?” Bert said, standing to her full height and placing her hands into the pockets of her jumpsuit. “What you in here fa?”
“Murder,” I said casually, leaning against the graffiti covered wall behind me.
Bert looked impressed as she sauntered over to me, hands still in her pockets, until she loomed over me menacingly.
