Beautiful War

(written under the influence of ‘Beautiful War’ by Kings of Leon)

Perhaps you should have lied when your wife asked, “What does she do better than me?”

But you told the truth.

In your defence, you usually told the truth, gall-bitter as it may be. That was who you were. It was also the agreed rule in your marriage. The rule was old, from the ten years you and Wobia dated, through seven years of marriage.

Even during the three delirious months when you fell feverishly fast for Tamara and happily lost your mind, technically, you didn’t break the rule by lying – you just never mentioned her. And when Wobia found out about Tamara, you still didn’t lie. And it wasn’t because of the messages on your phone, which were borderline incriminating, and which, had you been as honey-tongued as Tonse, your elder brother, you would have easily talked your way out of. You simply couldn’t lie, convincingly or otherwise.

So, you told the truth then. After Wobia’s shock and her tears that flooded for days; after your on-loop grovelling apologies and promises to be a better husband; after your ending it with Tamara (on impulse, on speaker-phone, with Wobia present) and deleting her number from your phone; finally, Wobia said she’d forgiven you.

Grateful, you vowed to be more honest, open. You told her that Tamara was the only person you had cheated on her with. You told her all your passwords. She was quieter, withdrawn, but you knew you had to give her time. It took a week before you touched her, but she lay frozen on the bed, and you stopped the kisses and hugged her instead, and she recoiled and stiffened at your touch, and you still held on, and you said you were sorry, and you were really sorry, but she didn’t thaw.

You were scheduled to go back to the oil platform on the Atlantic, just off-shore Asiama Island, where you worked the next day, and you hoped that by the time you returned home in three weeks, things between you and Wobia would have gotten back to normalish.

Then, the morning you were scheduled to leave, Wobia woke you gently. 4:12a.m.

And she asked you that question.

And you told her the truth.

Wobia

As I sat there listening to Ken talk his nonsense with his oblong head, I began to realise that my whole life with him was a lie.

“Blah-blah-blah…she seemed to understand me more…blah-blah-blah…I was connecting better with her…” Clap for yourself. Mr. Nokia, Connecting People. So, this girl who’s known you for a few months is suddenly connecting better than me who’s known you almost all your life. From when you were an awkward boy with oversized glasses and ashy knees.

“Yen-yen-yen…sex felt different…yen-yen-yen…blowjobs.” Ha! You’re talking about sex? I gave you your first kiss, which you slobbered through, remember? Me, Wobia, I disvirgined you, remember? Well, we were both virgins and it was two days after our wedding, but the point still stands.

I thought all these things, but I didn’t tell him.
