Chapter Six
She graciously accepted his apology, when what Melody really wanted to do was scream at him.
But young ladies do not act that way. Besides, Mrs Grogan explained that gently gently was the way to go.
She had to show Mr Peter Williams that she was flexible, and was willing to forgive him for his indiscretions when they first met.
And besides that, he seemed to be warming to her. Wasnât that what she wanted?
Sheâd sat opposite him at the table, and stole glances his way when possible.
From the moment sheâd set eyes on him, sheâd known he was a kind man, even if he was indecisive. He was also very handsome, with his dirty blond hair, as she liked to call it. Not quite brown, but darker than blond, it sat just below his collar. A little long, but not too long.
His blue eyes pierced her whenever he glanced her way. It was as though he was trying to see down into her soul.
âThat was lovely, Miss Harken,â he said as he wiped his mouth with the linen napkin. He stood, taking his plate with him.
âOh no, Mr Williams,â she said quickly. âThat is my job. Please sit down and let me clear the table.â
After all, as his wife, thatâs what she would do. Sheâd done that exact same thing for her father from the time her mother had died, so it wasnât as though she wasnât used to it.
Heat crept up his face, then he nodded and took his seat again.
They were dancing around each other â one not wanting to upset the other â and it felt a little precarious, to say the least.
She finished her last mouthful of food, then scooted around to the other side of the table, and cleared the dishes away.
âMy belly is full,â he said as he smiled at her. âYou are an excellent cook.â
She was disappointed and frowned. âIâve made dessert,â she said sadly. âI hope youâre not too full for that?â
âI, er,â
âTake the pie out of the oven, Miss Harken,â Mrs Grogan directed. âThen you two go for your walk. Weâll have dessert when you return.â
âOh, what a lovely idea,â Melody said, suddenly full of joy. âWhat do you think, Mr Williams?â
He wiped his mouth with the napkin again, then stood. âExcellent idea. Let me help you into your coat.â
Mrs Grogan nodded. âLook after her, Mr Williams.â
He stared at the older woman. âOf course.â He looked hurt. It was as though heâd been accused of something he hadnât done. âI would never let anything happen to Miss Harken.â
When they were both rugged up, Mrs Grogan gave Melody a basket to bring back her finds. They left the cozy house and headed toward the woods, where Melody had wanted to go.
She hooked her arm through his and it felt as though they were a couple. But of course they werenât.
âItâs not terribly far,â he said, stealing a glance at her. âThis area was mostly cleared when the town was built, but we felt it beneficial to keep the woods intact.
