Dancing with a friend is good medicineâhealing to the body and healthy for the friendship. In some cases, when youâve spent many years hanging out with a companion and dancing has not been an activity youâve shared, you might encounter difficulty at firstâyour bodies unsure of how to relate to each other. Here are a couple of movement recipes that might help get you going.
The Practice
When you are hanging out with a friend, spouse, child, lover, or colleague, put on music and dance together. You might be cooking dinner, gardening, watching television, house cleaning, or having a meeting. Take a break and dance.
At some point, dance entirely on your own, moving in a way that is solely dictated by your own bodyâs response to the music. At other points, join your partner and dance together, doing the same movements that your partner is doing. Move back and forth freely between these two optionsâdancing alone and then dancing together.
When you dance alone, fully commit to the movements you are doing. When one partner dances with intensity, the other partner feels the energy and can be moved into a similar space of energetic clarity. Commitment does not mean that you move fast and big; you can be committed to slow, lyrical movement as well. When you join your partner to move together, maintain your commitment to whatever movements you are executing.
As the dance develops, you might want to occasionally make physical contact, connecting your hands or bumping your hips or moving into traditional coupleâs dance positions. Then move away again, so that you can find your own private relationship to movement in the company of your friend.
Any place can be transformed into a dance hall: the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom, the elevator, the hallway, the stairwell, the garden.
