He jerked her to her feet and half dragged and then carried her across the café.
An hour later, Mertz Komroff stood at her door and contemptuously flung two silver dollars on the floor. “At that,” he said, “you’re a trifle overpaid.”
Her former Highness crouched on the bed and stared at the money which sparkled against the dingy carpet. Suddenly her face straightened and she pressed a moist hand against her forehead. Opening the drawer of her dresser she lifted a heavy blue steel revolver from its place among her handkerchiefs and crept to the window.
Peering down in the street, she saw Komroff stride out of the café and place a foot in the stirrup of his saddle.
Leveling the gun carefully, she took aim and pressed the trigger. The empty cartridge jumped back against the wall and a swirl of smoke curled around her head.
Below, Komroff slipped unsteadily into the saddle and looked up, conscious of a wet spot growing larger on his tunic. Suddenly he sat up straight and pointing his hand aloft, cried out a single word.
“Communist!” The cry reverberated and echoed up and down the crowded street. A madness seemed to engulf the crowd. People stopped, looked up, and seeing the face of the woman behind the smoking pistol, broke into a run.
Komroff smiled faintly as he watched them surge into the hotel, and then conscious of a growing weakness, slid from his horse to the street, where he stood for a moment. He gazed up at the window, made a slight gesture as though his hand held a saber, and crumpled, ceasing to hear the moan and roar of the crowd tearing madly into the tiny room of the hotel above him.
