HOUR FOUR

Ysolde

“I hope you’re pleased with yourself. You have broken your nose. Again. This makes, what, three broken noses?” I dabbed at the blood dripping from Baltic’s nose. He tried to glare at me, but since one of his eyes was swollen shut, it had less effect than I knew he hoped for.

“Four,” he said nasally. “Did the green mate say there was dragon’s blood?”

“It’s coming,” Aisling said, kneeling at one of her pieces of luggage. “There are only two bottles left, but that should be enough to get everyone back on their respective feet. Oh, sorry, sweetie. I thought the pillow barricade would hold you. Would someone mind picking Drake up off the floor?”

“I feel like Florence Nightingale patching up soldiers in the Crimean War,” Karma said as she moved through the debris of dragons and vampires, only about half of whom had made it to furniture. She held a bottle in one hand, and a stack of paper cups in the other. “Wine, Christian?”

“No, thank you,” he said, groaning when Allie poured him into a chair.

“He only drinks me,” the latter answered, then gave a little titter. “Sorry, that came out risqué. I meant he can only feed from me. I’ll take a glass, though.”

“Oh.” Karma looked down at the bottle. “Aisling told me to only let dragons have it. I figured Christian might be able to handle it, but I’m not sure about you.”

“It’s very potent. Lethal to mortals,” Aisling answered, peeling a protectively wrapped sweater off a second bottle before she got to her feet. “Although it might be OK for female vamps? I don’t know.”

“Neither do I,” Allie said, and tried to help Christian put his arm through his shirtsleeve, but he yelped and clutched his arm to his chest.

“There’s more Bolly,” I told her, ignoring the oath Baltic uttered under his breath. His phone pinged, and he flailed with one arm to try to reach it, but I hopped over his legs and got to it first, taking it over to him, sitting on the arm of the chair so he could see the screen. “It’s from Pavel—oh. Ratsbane. No news. They’ve had the midwife in again, and she says the baby simply isn’t ready to be born yet.” I propped the phone up on a pillow so he could use it with his uninjured arm.

“I was the same way with the twins,” Aisling called from where she was opening the second bottle of dragon’s blood wine. “Took me forever to have them. Drake almost had an aneurysm waiting.”

Adam, with a grunt of pain, got Drake back onto the love seat from which he’d slid off. His head was bloodied, and one hand was swollen and red, but he didn’t look too hurt to me.

“You deliberately waited until Baltic was bringing the house down upon us before you had them,” Drake said, trying to raise himself up enough to see Baltic, but the back of the love seat was too much for him, and he collapsed back down onto it with a groan.
