CHAPTER THIRTEEN

This year, returning to Grim Reaper Academy was different than last year, when I’d spent the summer vacation locked up in the Karmic Asylum. As I followed Headmaster Colin to the MDC tower, cradling my baby, I remembered how I’d felt out of place then. I’d recovered in less than a week and fell into the routine of classes, three meals a day, daily study and daily sneaking around to meet with my lovers, but now... Now I felt like that routine wasn’t for me at all. Now I felt like I was never going to belong here again. The headmaster entered the tower, and we started ascending the winding stairs. When we reached the landing to my floor, instead of stopping, Mason Colin continued up the stairs. I stood there confused for a minute, looking down the corridor. The door to my room looked inviting, and all I wanted was to crash into my own bed, among familiar things – my bedside lamp, the laptop on my desk, the plasma TV just on the opposite wall.

“Mistress,” Corri called me. She’d abandoned my shoulder and was now flying after the headmaster. “Come on! You have to see this!”

I shook my head and resumed climbing the endless staircase. It was time for the Academy to install an elevator. “Stupid. You can teleport now.” I’d spent so much time without my powers that I was going to need a minute to get used to having them back. I reached the topmost floor. Headmaster Colin was waiting for me in front of a door that he’d just opened. When I stopped in front of him, he handed me the key and motioned for me to step in.

“This is your new room,” he said.

My jaw dropped as I entered. This wasn’t just a room. It was an apartment! The kitchen was separated, there was a master bathroom and a master bedroom, a huge living room, and even a balcony. I stared at the colorful tapestries on the walls, depicting an enchanted forest and a lake in the moonlight, at the plasma TV that was twice as big as my old one, at the plush carpet and the spacious sofa and armchairs. I felt like I’d seen this layout before.

“Mila once stayed in a room like this.”

“Yes, she was moved to the luxury room in the VDC tower in year two.”

I nodded. “So, each tower has one.”

“Indeed. They are rarely in demand, as they are very expensive.”

“Oh. Then how... why...”

“Don’t worry about it. Everything has been taken care of.”

“By whom?”

Headmaster Colin stole a quick glance at El. She was fussy, surely hungry and in need of a bath. Corri was buzzing from one room to another, assessing the place.

“Your things are already here,” she chirped. “But you’ll need stuff for the baby. Proper stuff. Mistress, allow me to go shopping for you. It will only take minutes.”

What Corri meant when she said shopping was that she was going to ponder on the things we needed for a second, and then teleport them in the room using magic.
