Champollion wondered if his new alphabet, derived from much later Graeco-Roman inscriptions, might apply to this set of purely Egyptian inscriptions. The last two signs were familiar to him, having the phonetic value s. Using his knowledge of Coptic, he guessed that the first sign had the value re, which was the Coptic word for ‘sun’ – the object apparently symbolized by the sign. Did an ancient Egypian ruler with a name that resembled R(e)?ss exist? Champollion, steeped in his passion for ancient Egypt, immediately thought of Ramesses, a king of the 19th dynasty mentioned in a well-known Greek history of Egypt written by a Ptolemaic historian, Manetho. If he was correct, then the sign must have the phonetic value m. (He assumed that hieroglyphic did not represent vowels, except in foreign names.)
