Chapter 21

Spectra

Reins de Tombées was packed by the time Mercury and I arrived. Calin and his wives stood against the wall outside, looking rather annoyed.

"Finally," Gina growled. "They won't let us in."

Letting go of my hand, Mercury nodded. "I'll take care of it."

While Mercury cleared the de Viands to come inside, Calin pulled me into a hug. "Are you okay? Bay said Alexander hurt you!"

Suddenly overcome, I clung to Calin and hid my face against his chest. There was no telling him I was okay because I wasn't. The people I once trusted most were now the last people I could turn to. Well, maybe not the last, but the distinction between the Williamses and any other Nachtwelt citizen no longer existed.

"Spectra?" Calin worried. After a moment, he held me tighter and rubbed my back.

A year ago, I'd been certain who was good and evil, right and wrong, but from the moment Bay Ryder entered my life, it had all turned on its head.

I was married to two men, one an Angelis and the other everything I'd hated. I lived in a house full of predators, shared my bed and body with one, trusted another to keep me safe, and had come to look at the man who held me like a kind-of brother.

"Spec," Mercury's voice was low as he placed his hand on my neck and turned me from Calin's chest to his own. "Shh, I know!" Then, slowly tilting my face up, Mercury met my eyes. "Let's go inside. Food will do you good."

Taking the hankie Merc offered, I cleaned up my face as best I could. Inside, we passed the dance floor to the restaurant stairs. Unlike when I brought Bay here, we were taken straight to our table away from the window.

The Changeurs were the talk of the gossip vine as we passed, many unhappy that Mercury would let them into their sanctuary. First, I'd brought a de Sang, now de Viands. Could I sink any lower?

"I think we've really pissed off your clientele," Calin muttered to Mercury as we took our seats.

"They'll get over it. Just don't go telling your friends about it."

"Seriously? I'd already posted it to my social media account."

Smirking, Mercury crooked his finger, and a waiter came running. "Entrees. Four of everything. We need tea, Spectra needs coke, I need vodka, and whatever the Changeurs want. Spectra is also going to need sweet corn soup and orange juice. Start with that. We'll order mains once entrees arrive."

"Yes, Sir." The waiter took the drink orders for everyone and ran.

"Why are you ordering for Spectra?" Gina glared.

"She needs food to recover from Alexander's attack, or her body goes into shock. So if she uses her abilities, make sure she eats. It won't stop the aftershock, but it should minimize it. The more power, the more food she'll need."

"I'm not even hungry," I grumbled. "Just tired."

"You need energy," Mercury firmed his voice.

Knowing better than to argue, I rested my head on his shoulder. "Fine."

"Ah, ah, no going to sleep.
