Chapter 9 - Franklin

Franklin felt sick the whole way to the bar he’d agreed to take Kayla to. It was clear she could tell something was up—her silver eyes had been darting between him and Grace the whole time they were in the apartment, and though she was only asking him small-talk questions, he could almost feel her curiosity burning the air between them.

“We met two days ago, okay?” he snapped, when silence had stretched a little longer than it needed to. “She’s new in town, she’s staying at my place, she got the wrong idea about us, the end.”

“Poor thing,” Kayla said after a measured pause. “What gave her the wrong idea, do you think?”

Did she know? What was it about women like this one? She was so beautiful, but her face was like a wall of ice… it was more like talking to a magazine than to a person. He had no idea whether she was incredibly smart or incredibly stupid, for example. It was like she was all poise and no personality. Incredibly magnetic by virtue of her beauty, he was well aware of the stares they were getting as they walked down the street towards Sunny Rock’s most fashionable bar, but very, very difficult to have a conversation with.

Or maybe it was his fault. That was definitely a possibility, he thought as they joined the queue, Kayla shooting him an inscrutable stare as they took their place in the line… not a woman who was used to waiting in line to get anywhere, he supposed. Sure enough, the bouncer soon hustled up to invite them to the front of the line, and he felt the dirty looks of the other people in the line boring into the back of his head as he followed Kayla into the crowded club. He felt underdressed next to her, for all that he was wearing his newest shirt and his most formal trousers. He had a feeling that Kayla could make supermodels feel underdressed if she quirked her eyebrow just right.

He fought his way through the crowds at the bar to order them both some drinks, and then they found a booth to sit in. She kept gazing out over the heads of the crowd, clearly unimpressed with the atmosphere… something she and Franklin had in common, he suspected, though perhaps not for the same reasons. The music was loud and monotonous, and it seemed to have conspired with the dull headache building between his eyes to throb at the exact same frequency, driving the pain deeper and deeper into his skull like a knife…

Kayla. He was here with Kayla, he had to at least pretend to be a good date. When she and her friends had started flirting with him at the community center earlier, he’d been a mixture of flattered and confused that they’d had any interest in him at all. The brunettes, whose names he’d already forgotten, had clearly just wanted to mess with him, but Kayla was different.
