I want to take Skylar’s hand, reassure her somehow that the person I am today is still the same Jake she fell in love with. That she has nothing to fear from the Bastards or the lifestyle I’ve made for myself.

But that isn’t entirely true.

I’m not the same man I was before. Being part of this club, I’ve done things I never imagined I would do. Things that if I were caught, I would be put away for a long time or worse. If the wrong people caught me, I would be killed. Can she handle being with me and knowing that? I could walk out one morning and never come back home. It’s possible she would never be told the full truth about what happens to me, too. Club business and all. Do I want to put her through that?

“I can’t tell you everything, but I’ll tell you what I can,” I let her know.

“I think I can handle that. Allie told me she never really knows all the details about the runs.”

I almost roll my eyes. I do like Allie, but I really fucking wish the two of them weren’t gossiping about the club like that. Allie isn’t an ol’ lady, and even if she were, she wouldn’t know everything either.

“And I can’t ever tell you all the details about what we do, Skylar,” I tell her honestly. “We do a lot of good things for the city, but we do other things that some may frown upon. You can’t ever ask what I’m doing. If I want you to know, I’ll tell you. That’s the way it is.”

“I can try to accept that. My brother brought you in, didn’t he? He told me that much.”

“Hunter called me the night we were together. I knew where he was, and I’ll admit, I was disappointed that he’d barely been back home. Skylar, you have to know, he left to join the Bastards to protect you and your dad. Your dad’s gambling debt was out of control, and some bad people were after him. You would’ve been caught in the crossfire. Hunter handled that once he pledged to the club. When he called me, I honestly had no idea he was going to ask me to come pledge. I had given up on that, but he did, and I left.”

I can tell by her expression that she had already put this together. I wouldn’t have left her for anyone else. At the time, I owed Hunter my life. I can’t go back and change my decision, and I’m not sure I’d want to.

“I came and pledged to the Bastards, which means I became a prospect. That’s what Dash and Munsey are. Munsey is probably about to receive his patch. His name badge won’t read ‘Prospect’ any longer.”

“What’s a prospect exactly?”

“In simple terms, it’s someone who has not earned their patch, their name. They do the shit work most of the time, anything to prove they are loyal and deserve to be patched in.
