Chapter Eleven

“What?” I almost sink to the ground— it takes Aire and Smok to steady me. “But… but how… what…”

“She has already killed many gods and goddesses,” Nyja informs me. “The ones that are still left are hiding within Svarog, or elsewhere. They fear to fight her.”

“If that’s the case, then how can I win?” I ask him helplessly. “How do you expect me to battle her with just a handful of sirens?”

“You can’t. You’ll have to rally the help of the gods,” Nyja informs me. “If you have any hope at all to live through this matter, you’ll have to travel to Svarog, and try convincing the gods to fight for you.”

Nyja gives me a sneer. “Though I wouldn’t count on it. Many are still angry with you for abandoning them when they needed you most. If I were you, I’d leave Poland to her fate and flee the country with your dragons. Perhaps there is somewhere on this earth far enough away that Natska will not find you.”

“Will you fight for me?” I ask. I look up at Nyja, and hope for a helpful answer.

He remains silent for a time, thinking. “I don’t know, Fliss. I lost many friends when I last promised to fight for you, and you did not show up.”

A roll of guilt churns through my stomach, though I don’t remember. “I’m sorry, Nyja.”

“Sorry doesn’t bring my loved ones back,” he replies cruelly. “Sorry doesn’t fix the things you’ve done. If you wish to earn forgiveness from all of us, the only way you can is to end Chernbog for good.”

He collapses back into his throne. “A thing that might not be possible. You are no longer Lada. I can see it in your eyes. You’re just a silly girl.”

I feel hollowed out by Nyja’s comment. Aire grips my arm. “Fliss is stronger than you know,” Aire says. “She’s the greatest among any of us. And she’ll prove you wrong.”

“Keep silent, Kupalo. None of you are who you used to be, either.” Nyja sniffs. “The gods of fire, war, and water, reduced to nothing more than reptilian fire starters. Pathetic.”

“Maybe we don’t need to be them. Maybe we needed to become something different in order to defeat her,” Smok shoots back.

Nyja laughs heartlessly. “What? A useless mortal? Three incompetent dragons? You used to be four of the most powerful gods alive, loved and feared by everyone. Now look at you. You were defeated by Zirnitra. He is the weakest among us. If you can’t beat him, what hope is there to defeat her?”

“Leave my dragons alone,” I snap. “We were separated before. We’re together now. Nothing can stop us, not even Natska.”

“How sentimental.” Nyja makes a face. “I remember you saying something similar, the day before you fled.”

“Well, like you said, I’m not that person anymore.” I stand taller. “I’ve changed. I’m different. And maybe I have what I need now to stop her, when I didn’t before.”

Nyja isn’t impressed. “We’ll see.”

I chew on the inside of my lip.
