“You offer them a ride, but they want to take the wheel.”

PUERTO RICAN EXPRESSION

The dust and debris settled, revealing a tunnel and three figures standing in combat-ready positions. Anthony and Abuela Luci emerged first, with Anthony sweeping the room with his gun as Abuela held up a machete.

Behind them, a tall, slender man holding a detonator in one hand and a strange instrument in the other shouted triumphantly. “I told you there was no one standing near the wall,” he said to Abuela.

My befuddled gaze took in the bespectacled eyes, head full of thick gray curls, and pressed chinos and loafers. “Albert Witherspoon?” I stared in wonder at Abuela’s neighbor.

“Chelsea and Sheldon?” Anthony asked in the same way before narrowing his eyes and cocking the gun at them.

Sheldon immediately raised his hands and pressed his back to the door.

“Get away from her!” Abuela Luci roared as she charged the stairs two at a time with the machete over her head.

“Abuela, no!” I shouted as she kya’ ed (Is this correct? I’m not familiar with the term.) loudly, bringing the machete down less than a half inch next to Sheldon’s scrunched-up face. “I was helping her escape,” he squeaked out.

“They both are, and we don’t have time! Webber and Lillian are almost here.” I grabbed Abuela’s arm and tried pulling her down the stairs. “Wait! Are you okay?” she demanded to know.

“Yes, I’m fine. I promise. But we need to get out of here. Where does the tunnel lead?”

“Dayton National Cemetery,” she answered.

Abuela dislodged the machete and followed me down. Anthony lowered his gun, gestured to Sheldon and Chelsea with his head, and they put their hands down and followed us. “You all go on,” Anthony instructed us. “Albert, Sheldon, and I will take them on and hold them until the police arrive.”

“You want us little ladies to run away while you stay behind? I don’t think so,” I blew up. “We’re just as competent as you. They have more weapons, and we don’t know if it’s just them. They’re dangerous, and I’m not leaving here without you.”

Anthony sent Albert a questioning look.

“I’ll close the tunnel behind us with the C4, but I need everyone at least ten feet away. Go!” Albert answered as he waved us into the damp, musty tunnel, one by one.

Sheldon took Chelsea’s hand, and they ran ahead. I took Abuela’s machete from her, Anthony picked up a flashlight lying against the wall, and the three of us took off after them, with Anthony lighting the tunnel and Abuela setting the pace for us.

“C4 explosives?” I questioned her as we rounded a bend.

“I told you he owned all sorts of neat things!” Abuela responded, sounding like she was out on a stroll and not running for her life.

“Now!” Anthony shouted behind us to Albert.

“You consider explosives to be neat things? And what is he even going to blow up to cover the hole? All I see is soil,” I argued.

“You’re always poo-poohing him!”

“How did you find me?” I huffed next.
