Chapter 19

Marzdyn’s eyes popped open and he lifted a shaky hand to his head. Rage ripped through his bones, but the emotion didn’t worry him. All weaknesses would be crushed and overcome.

He refused to wipe away the trickle of perspiration from his brow. Instead, he rose to face the wall of windows and waited for the tremors in his legs to cease. Darkness hid the chasm and a thick cloud covering concealed the moon and stars, making it seem the abyss had risen to swallow up the rest of the world. The setting suited his mood.

At last, he had penetrated the dreamcaster’s mind. Had crept into her dreams like a spider to weave his web in the corner, unnoticed. The planted kernel of lust had ripened beneath Black’s weakness for her, reducing the dreamcaster’s guard to naught more than a thread. She had fallen into his trap without a moment of hesitation, coloring the dream with desire and drawing Black with her. And then…

Marzdyn ignored the chill on his skin. He had not expected to be cast from her dream.

He unclenched his fists, relaxed his aching fingers. This particular dreamcaster must be handled with more than his usual craftiness.

A cleansing breath through his nose brought the smell of his own sweat, floor polish and the leather chair. The experience had not been a complete loss, alleviating a niggling fear. She surely would have claimed Black by now were they matched. He shook his head in mild disappointment. After years of loyal compliancy, Black had reverted to his old ways and chosen to rebel. Fool.

Marzdyn spun on his heel and strode over the marble floor in a rustle of robes, his limbs steady, his control restored. He had left a few unpleasant surprises for the dreamcaster. She would return to Alderwood and her fate would proceed as planned. The Black, however…

He had arranged a special punishment for his favorite son.
