Chapter Ten

“Persistence is the key.” Lei Ping

Spook Squad Headquarters, NW Portland, late that same day

“Here’s the deal.” Kaz looked at Ping and stepped in close, invading his personal space. “If you’re serious about being my shadow, you’re going to do what I say. Got it?” High above the cracked sidewalk on which they stood, an immense gothic Victorian house loomed, casting dank shadows. She fought the urge to shiver.

“Of course. Shall it be like Burma?”

Luna, that was so long ago. Back when Kaz returned the favor of teaching Ping to control his new beast. She smiled. “You mean like when you pretend you’re going to do what I say and not what you feel like doing?” She flipped her hand up stalling whatever excuse he had ready.

“Save it. Yes. Stand guard. Ramsay and I will go talk to the Squad.” Kaz’s beast practically chortled with glee. This part of her, the desire to lead and protect a pack, had been ruthlessly squelched by her need not to harm anyone. She’d done so much damage when she’d first transformed that she couldn’t—wouldn’t—trust herself, so she’d become a lone wolf to protect everyone. Feeling her other self’s glee nearly gutted her. She'd never let herself see the truth. That she harmed herself as well as those that needed her by staying lone. It was time to stop being so selfish.

“Tell me again. What’s the Spook Squad?” Ramsay asked as Ping began his patrol.

“Until we get a banshee, the Spook Squad is the governing body of Portland’s ghosts. They’re also my back-up if I need it.” Thank you, Luna. Focusing on the minutiae and educating Ramsay on the cities unique aspects helped her compartmentalize.

“Portland has enough ghosts to warrant a banshee?”

Kaz laughed and nodded. “You have no idea. Our last banshee went a bit loopy. She was young and couldn’t handle the thousands of ghosts, spirits, haints, and haunts that roam this city. Until we get a new one, the Squad is responsible for running herd on them and making sure none of them provide evidence for life after death. In a city this weird, it’s not that hard.”

Turning to the brothers, she asked, “How about you three? Feel like guarding up top?” She took it as a yes when they all saluted, flew to the top of the house, and disappeared.

“Let’s go, Henchman.” If Kaz could think of him as the Henchman instead of Ramsay or the young man she’d loved so long ago, she’d be better off. She could control her desire for him. They needed to find Doc and stop her. And maybe after all the dust settled, Ramsay would want to stay. Her heart squeezed into a tight fist and then beat like a wild thing behind the cage of her ribs. Please Luna, let him stay.

Kaz and Ramsay climbed the steep lichen-covered steps leading up from street level to the cracked concrete walkway of the mansion the Spook Squad called their own. Small creatures rustled through the weed-choked lawn.
