Chapter Twenty

Several hours later, Slate and Wesley sat in the office, writing down their official statements for the police. The medical examiner had come in from the city to take the body away. The sheriff took some pictures, asked some questions and left.

Slate wondered how the medical examiner would classify this since it clearly wasn’t an animal attack or a hit and run. Accidental drowning out on the ice?

“Hey,” Wes said, “how was dinner with your mate last night?”

He couldn’t help the smile. “Unbelievable,” he replied. “We stayed late and talked about everything. She was happy to be there. Her smell made my wolf giddy. Never felt him that way before. What about you and the friend, what’s her name?”

“Hailey,” he said. “She was nice and good to look at, but not my type. Too high-maintenance. After dinner, we went our separate ways.”

Slate laughed. “I could’ve told you she was high-maintenance the first time I saw her. I’m glad Ava isn’t that way.”

“Are you sure she won’t tell anyone about the body? She’s seen two of the three deaths. How could a human not freak out over that?”

“She’s a homicide detective in Houston,” Slate said.

Wesley’s head snapped up. “No shit? I never would’ve pegged her as that. It explains the questions and comments the night she found the second body.” He shook his head, going back to writing. “No wonder you wanted her to come along. Does she have any ideas as to what is going on?”

He frowned. “I don’t think so. We haven’t talked much about it. Yesterday, she drilled me with questions. Damn, I felt like I’d done something even though I hadn’t.”

Wesley laughed. “Isn’t that normal with women, though?”

Kadir walked in.

“It’s about time,” Slate said.

“Hey,” Kadir said in his defense, “I had to calm the guests who were curious about all the police activity. Here, I brought you both a sandwich.”

Slate caught the sub tossed to him. “You’re forgiven,” he said. “As long as there’s mayo on this.”

“Yes, there’s mayo on it. After all this time, do you think I don’t have a clue what my boss wants?” Kadir pouted.

Slate stood, taking a bite. With his mouth full, he replied, “You don’t want me to answer that.” He’d finished eating his sandwich by the time he got to the front lobby. After taking a break at the men’s room to wash his hands, he called Ava so they could meet up.
