SIMEON

Elyse was bothering me.

Not like she had before. But because she didn’t make sense. A few days ago, I hated her on sight. Now…well, I wasn’t sure.

After we had sex, Elyse quickly fell asleep while I lay there with my eyes closed, trying to do the same. My thoughts were going too quickly, and I needed to focus on something specific. I got up, Elyse stirring for just a moment. I smoothed her hair away from her face and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. She sighed and curled up tighter. She was beautiful, addicting, and this was so dangerous. I went to my library.

I grabbed a few options—a few thrillers I’d tear through without thinking too hard about them. Even though they were often a good distraction, Elyse was distracting me more. I pulled a few books on healing herbs and paged through them, slipping bits of paper between the pages that had information on treating her illness. Just for future reference.

That only made my thoughts go in a spiral of worries that made me even more awake. Clearly, this wasn’t a case of insomnia that a few books could solve.

Instead, I went out, shifted into my wolf form, and ran into the woods, the moonlight guiding me. Being in my wolf form was always an escape, like going back home after a long time away. The amplified scents of the damp woods were a welcome distraction from the now-familiar scent of Elyse that had taken over my bedroom.

She was still asleep when I left, splayed out across the bed. How she took up so much space on it while being so small, I had no idea. But I liked seeing her there too much. It felt right, as much as everything else in the world was telling me it wasn’t.

I ran faster and farther, exploring some of my favorite parts of the woods and trying to push my body harder than before. It took a lot to tire me out, but I was going to try to work myself until my brain stopped drifting toward Elyse.

Eventually, the sun started to come up, and I had to get back to tackle the day. I was going to have breakfast with Dex, hopefully without Elyse’s presence to distract me, before I had meetings with my advisors about everything she and I had uncovered.

I showered and dressed alone—having Elyse with me was guaranteed to make me late, and Dex would tease me about it. She was still passed out on the bed, buried under the blankets. With the light coming in from outside, streaming across her face, she was so beautiful it upset me. Why did she, of all the shifters in the Blood Moon pack, have to be the one to come here? She was impossible to ignore.

“You’re staring,” she said, one eye popping open.

“You’re still asleep,” I shot back, clearing my throat. “Or you were.”

“Is it late?” She sat up, the covers falling around her hips and exposing her breasts.
