Chapter 18

Blake pulled into the diner’s parking lot just as Jane pulled away with Hannah Pinckney in the seat beside her. Hannah’s little gold car was still sitting in the far corner of the lot. Blake scowled, parked, and slammed his way out of his truck, only to see Bet heading out of the diner toward him.

“Back in the truck,” Bet said, pointing at the driver’s door.

Blake growled out his frustration with the turn of events and threw the door open again, hopping back inside and restarting the truck.

“What’s going on?”

“She’s about to spill Reave secrets to your new girl.” Bet flashed a sharp smile at Blake, one that made Blake’s gut tighten. “Nice one, by the way.”

“She’s mine, asshole. Don’t even think about it.”

“She’s yours if you can keep her,” Bet said, tapping the side of the door next to the window track. “Those are the rules.”

“I can keep her,” Blake growled out, giving the truck more gas than it needed to get out onto the main road. The back tires tore into the gravel at the edge of the road. He let off before he let his irritation with Bet get the best of him. “I assume I’m supposed to be following them,” he said, keeping eye on the tail of Jane’s care.

“Yeah. The Pinckney girl hasn’t manifested. If she doesn’t, you know what that’ll mean. We can’t let her run around telling tales.”

Blake clenched his teeth. “Fuck.” He turned the steering wheel with more force than necessary, slipping into the turning lane a few cars behind Jane. If she looked, she’d see him, but maybe she wouldn’t think too much of it. Gambel City wasn’t big enough to get lost in. “It’s not right.”

“Can’t screw with the old laws,” Bet said. “I don’t like it either.”

A surge of rebellion made Blake say, “I won’t be part of it.”

“You’ll do what our alpha tells you to do, and you know you will. Don’t be a shit about it. The packs can’t survive if they don’t support each other and that means we live by the old laws until someone’s crazy enough to risk another goddamn war.”

Blake’s knuckles went white on the steering wheel. “Maybe it’s worth it. I’ve been thinking—”

Bet’s hand hit the back of Blake’s head—hard enough to knock Blake’s teeth together.

Blake threw his fist out, but Bet ducked and leaned and Blake’s fist just missed his cousin’s jaw.

“You fucking idiot,” Bet said. “Don’t start talking like that. Brand’ll take his claws to you, and you know it. Bastien likes you but he’ll do what his father says because he knows it’s the only way he’ll be alpha—he’s just like his dad. The pack will always come first.”

Blake’s heart thudded hard, his blood fired by the knowledge that he was talking about something that could get him killed. And Bet was right. The law was the law, and no one would like it, but they’d do it all the same if it meant protecting the pack.

Shit.

While Blake was waiting on his turn at the light, he glanced toward Bet.
