Chapter Eight

Brenda Trimble Diedrich stared at the distant settlement through binoculars. The moon lit upon the small community, giving it an almost Norman Rockwellesque appeal. Unfortunately for the inhabitants all she wanted to do was dissect their genome.

“You’ll never get close enough,” she murmured. “They have heightened senses. Your scent will be detected long before you catch any in your crosshairs.”

“Scent repellant,” Victor Behrdon snapped. “And we’re going in downwind. Besides, I’ve got snipers ready to take out the abominations. I called in all my men and they’ll be here this evening.”

Brenda snorted in derision. “You’re a fool, Victor.”

“Well, I certainly was a fool for trusting you to deliver on the promises you spouted. Where’s my change serum?”

Anger flushed through her and she fisted her hand in order to gain control of her rage. She still needed the old fool.

“The wolf is mine,” she said coldly.

“Which wolf? I’m sure there are several down there that would love to take a chunk out of you.”

She ignored his taunt. “You know very well which one I’m talking about. The one called Darwin.”

“It’s ridiculous that such creatures have names. As if they’re normal people. They’re nothing more than abominations that need eradication.”

“Oh please,” she snapped. “You just want them in your collection, stuffed like the trophies they are.”

“Precisely.” Victor Behrdon shook his head. “If it hadn’t been for me hitting one with my car I wouldn’t have ever known such creatures existed.”

“Stones was grateful you spared his life,” she replied. “He betrayed his own people out of gratitude.”

“Stones wanted the cash,” he corrected. “And I don’t give a flying shit that he betrayed his own kind. Money is thicker than blood. Come on. If you want your precious Darwin you best gear up. He won’t be easy to take.”

“Oh, I have a secret weapon to capture him,” she promised. “He’ll recognize my perfume and it’ll bring him straight to me.”

Victor shrugged and walked away without a backward glance.

Brenda glanced once more at the sleepy little town and excitement surged through her, making her almost giddy with pleasure. Tonight, she’d have her favorite pet back.

Unable to fall asleep, Mitch rose and dressed. Although peace coursed through his soul, his mind wouldn’t rest. He kept thinking about that scientist bitch and how she seemed fixated on Darwin. He hated the fact that his mate had been caged up, tortured and endured God-knew-what. Darwin had never confirmed that experiments had been done to him, hell, he probably wasn’t sure. But Doc Wilder had mentioned some things that Ajay and Logan had endured and it didn’t take a genius to put two and two together. The little virus, or fever, or what-the-fuck ever he’d had in the forest only solidified that the woman had done something to him, and it terrified Mitch that Darwin could succumb to something he wouldn’t be able to fight.

Stepping outside, Mitch looked up at the moon. Being half wolf, the night had always soothed him and let his mind settle as he searched for answers.
