Chapter Six

Alexa had pulled her nightshirt back on, and Jesse had a bath towel knotted low on his hips. She found an open bottle of wine in the fridge and brought it into the bedroom with two glasses. Now, they sat cross-legged on the bed, sharing it.

“I don’t know why I’m not passed out on your floor.” He grinned. “Charlie and I had a hellacious night tonight. Then I show up here and fuck your brains out. Not to mention what’s left of mine.” He raised his glass in a toast to her. “You could breathe life into a mummy, sweet thing. I see you and I don’t know what I want to do first—lick that sweet little slit of yours or suck your tasty nipples. Maybe feel your ass clench itself around my fingers or fill your pretty cunt jam-full with my cock.”

Alexa couldn’t believe she blushed. “Maybe it was all that adrenaline driving you,” she pointed out.

He shook his head. “Possibly a little, but, darlin’, the rest is you.” His eyes raked her over the rim of his glass. “I don’t know what it is, Alexa. The first time I saw you, I wanted your body. That’s all it was. I’ll admit it. You don’t know how many nights I dreamed about stripping you naked and stuffing my cock into you as far as it would go.”

“I…had thoughts about you, too,” she admitted with a shy little smile.

Jesse put his glass carefully on the nightstand. “The sex is phenomenal. Better than I could have imagined.”

“But?” Her stomach knotted. She didn’t think she wanted hear what came next. She wasn’t ready for this yet.

He reached for the hand not holding the wine glass, linking his fingers through hers. “This is about a lot more than sex, sweet thing. A lot more. And I don’t think either of us expected it.”

I didn’t. That’s for sure.

“I tried to talk to you about this the other night, but we got…sidetracked.”

“I like that track,” she grinned.

“Me, too, darlin’, but I can’t have you walk into this unless you really know what’s going on.”

Oh, Jesse, you have no idea how much I know.

“Like I tried to say before, there are reasons why I’ve never looked for any kind of permanent relationship,” he went on. “You know what kind of job I have. I don’t think it’s fair to a woman to ask her to deal with that. All that garbage and anxiety and the constant worry.”

Alexa sipped slowly on her wine. She had to be very careful here not to give anything away. “I know you’re on the gang task force. And I’ve seen and read enough about it to know it’s dangerous and dirty work.”

His face darkened and his eyes shuttered, an automatic response to close out unpleasantness. “See, that’s the thing, Alexa. What I do is so dirty I hate to soil our relationship by even discussing it.”

“Damn it, Jesse.” She tossed back the rest of the wine. “If you’re setting up roadblocks here, I should at least know what they are.
