CHAPTER 14

“Okay,” Fiona said, nodding her head. “I’m ready.”

Jim stepped up next to her and reached for her hand. Their fingers slipped together and interlocked. “We are ready,” he corrected.

Fiona glanced over at him and smiled, making my heart expand in adoration of their cuteness.

It was a little condescending to consider them cute-as-fuck when I expected my mates and me to be seen as a real… not couple since there were four of us, but a real relationship. I didn’t want to see Fiona as any less adult than me or my mates, but it was hard when I’d only seen her one way for such a long time. She’d been forced to grow up faster than anyone should. Like me, I supposed. The thought made my stomach ache.

When we were freed from the mountain and Raphael’s clutches, I’d hoped for better things for my sisters. That wish hadn’t come true yet, though it had, in part, for a while for some of the girls. Their lives were in chaos again, not because of Raphael’s army but because of a bigger, worse enemy. The brotherhood threatened us all, and there was no way I would let them succeed.

With our purpose reinforced in my mind, I nodded at Fiona and Jin, who slipped into the viewing room next to the interview room I’d been using to grill the captive guys.

The door opened, and a huge man with familiar familial features was escorted in, wearing handcuffs made of incredibly strong metal. He was a brute, one of the biggest guys to work for Raphael. Eying him, I kept my arms crossed over my chest and a flat look on my face, revealing nothing about why I was there. His face darkened the moment he saw me, and his eyes flashed with disgust.

I wondered what it must be like to live your entire life disgusted by your blood relations, knowing you came from the same DNA. How did the guys live their lives hating themselves? I supposed they had their glorious purpose, a bigger reason to live and continue every day.

Old Ones, Raphael had really done a number on our brothers.

It hurt to think of them as family, so I tried not to, but sometimes, like when I was staring one of them in eyes so familiar, I could pinpoint girls who were his sisters and who his mother would’ve been.

“What’s she doing here?” he growled, pulling his arm back sharply when the guards tried to lead him to the table and chair in the middle of the sparse room.

“She has a name,” I said, shooting him a jaunty grin as the guards shoved him into the seat and secured his cuffs to a ring that would ensure he stayed on his side and couldn’t reach me.

“Cunt,” he spat, eyes flashing with undisguised hatred.

“Lexi,” I said slowly, sounding out the syllables as I would for a child. I pointed to my chest and repeated, “Lexi, but you knew that, didn’t you, Jared?” I looked down at him, literally and figuratively.
