Map 36 Movements and Fighting 7-8 October 1944.

The German Luftwaffe had to wait for the fog and clouds to clear to attack the Soviet spearheads. It immediately knocked out seven AFVs from the spearhead, destroyed numerous vehicles and shot down several Soviet aircraft, but was unable to hinder the strong forward thrust of the Soviet advance, the more so since few aircraft were available, and those that were suffered from shortages of fuel and ammunition.

The staff of the 57th Panzer Korps was directly confronted with the altered situation when, at about 1200 hours, Soviet forces arrived at its command post and then swung north toward Gyoma, thereby dispersing the Korps staff. Staff remnants later gathered in Mezötur. The fears that the Soviets would direct their primary thrust toward Belgrad was allayed by observations of enemy movements. The Soviets apparently came to the Theiß crossings at and south of Szolnok, which did not prevent them from broadening their breakthrough to the right (Komadi Großwardein), so that Soviet forces now strove for the Theiß on a broad front.
