Hope against All Hope

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Romans 4:18 NIV

When you are powerless to change your situation, you may feel imprisoned in a cell of hopelessness. The key to your freedom is not a change in circumstances, but hope in the God who is not bound by circumstances.

Abraham had no power to change his situation. Although God had promised him a son, at seventy-five years old with an aging wife, Abraham knew the fulfillment of God’s promise was humanly impossible. His firm hope seems laughable to a world that views life in terms of human ability. It was against this narrow, worldly hope that Abraham hoped, and he was not disappointed. Sarah bore Isaac twenty-five years later at ninety years old, testifying that God’s promises are not constrained by human limits.

Your circumstances do not constrain what God can and will do in your life. When you hope against all hope as Abraham did, you are hoping against a brittle, worldly hope that crumbles at the sight of God’s promises. As a Christian, you are not bound by the laws of this world but freed by the power of Christ.

Today, choose to hope against all hope. Watch and be amazed as God’s power transcends your circumstances, for His promises never fail.
