CHAPTER TEN

~

Viv frowned. What a strange thing to say. “What? Bloodthirsty? The only one I know that has a thing for blood is Sebastian…”

“Him too. And the Mayor. And let’s not forget that elder witch of yours,” he said, pointing at her.

“Delta?” Viv was lost. She had no clue what he was talking about.

“After I visited your cottage earlier, that vampire blindsided me, knocked me out and took me to a barn…”

“Barn?” Viv wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but he didn’t look as if he was crazy. At least, no crazier than he’d looked earlier.

“The Mayor and your elder were there, debating whether to kill me or not.”

Viv chuckled with disbelief. “That’s not…”

“Until my alpha showed up, and I told them you were my mate,” Drew said, and saw the confusion on her face.

“But that’s…” Viv absently waved her hand in front of her. “But this is…”

“A nice friendly community?” Drew said, chuckling. “Unless you’re a shifter.”

“But Mayor Plank’s shifters never…” she said, stopping to consider it.

“Maybe you just don’t see the bloodthirsty underbelly of this town. I wouldn’t be surprised if the vampire doesn’t have a cellar full of blood slaves on tap,” Drew said, snorting his contempt for the man.

Viv’s mind was racing. Delta had never said anything to her, and she’d certainly never said anything to Olivia, or everyone would have heard about it.

What was going on? Perhaps Drew was just making things out to be worse than they actually were. Maybe he’d taken it the wrong way … been hasty in his summing up of what actually happened? “Maybe it was just a friendly warning to keep you away from the witches…?”

“Yeah,” he said, spitting out a derisive chuckle. “Being knocked unconscious and chained up in a barn as they discuss killing me – sounds like a friendly warning to me – not.”

“Chained?” Viv said, a look of disbelief on her face. That thought left a sour taste in her mouth. “What the flying duck were they thinking?”

“Kill the shifter, end the problem?” he tossed back. She really hadn’t known what was going to happen to him. He couldn’t sense an ounce of deceit coming from her. “Don’t feel bad…”

“Me? For…?”

“Reporting me to the powers that be,” he said.

“What powers that be?” Viv said, her voice climbing a decibel or two.

“I got the impression that those three ruled the roost around here. Grant, the alpha of my pack is going to be holding a meeting with the pack hierarchy about it,” he informed her, and she scowled.

“I didn’t report you, and to who? I didn’t know anything about anything,” Viv said, intrigued, disgusted that they’d treated him that way, and a little disturbed that it had happened at all.

“You said yourself; I wasn’t supposed to be on witch land…”

“Yes, but that was just…” She stopped on a thought. There were hard and fast rules about staying on your own side of town. She’d been given the lecture when she’d moved to Knowing, by Delta, but she never thought that there could be such consequences involved about breaking those rules.
