Chapter 20

“There’s someone specific here now,” Sue said to the room at large.

They sat around the office, the six of them plus the cat, in the desk chair, the reading chair by the window, another small chair brought from a guest room, and, for Lars and Tom, on the floor. Only Sue stood, lighting candles on the altar she had placed on Tom’s desk, contemplating the bookshelves, or gazing down at the tea bag still on the floor before them.

“A man in uniform, one alone. But...” Sue’s brows drew together. “I’m not getting the connection.” She shut her eyes, standing before the shelf. “What’s here? What do you need?”

After a long silence, she turned away, pacing to the altar.

Sanders, sitting in the desk chair, gazed into the flickering candles. Tom could tell the late night was catching up to him, even if he had accepted a cup of green tea.

Amanda sat in the reading chair at the window with Lars sitting on the floor by it, leaned back against the chair. They had Sue’s reverie harp and bansuri to hand, Amanda with the harp in her lap, Lars sipping tea, both waiting quietly for any sign from Sue.

Rhys sat on the extra chair, on the door side of the desk, holding a mug and not appearing particularly interested in the proceedings. Instead of Sue, he watched Sanders from the corner of his eye. Tom wondered what he was aching to pitch to Sanders. Selling stocks maybe? Being in a room with Sanders Templeton was clearly of much greater interest to him than potentially being in one full of ghosts. Obviously not his thing. No more than the banking world was a thing for Lars.

Seeing the three on each side, this contrast between Sanders, Rhys, and himself, next to Sue in her rainbow wardrobe, Amanda and her cropped hair and tattoos, and Lars with his ponytail and what Tom had recognized on second glance as a torc around his neck, it all made Tom think of a bar joke.

Three bankers and three witches walk into a bar...

Only trouble, what was the punchline? He still hadn’t figured that out.

Tom sat on the floor, leaned back against the wall next to the doorway, near Sue’s pacing and the mystery bookshelves. He hadn’t had a chance to drink his tea as he tried to keep London happy and in the room with them. She’d attempted to walk away as everyone got settled. Tom knew she wasn’t spooked, but simply going to bed. Tom had held onto her and he’d just about gotten her asleep in his lap now.

Sue had wanted the cat in the room if possible and Tom was surprised now that London sprawled dreamily across his legs, eyes shut, purring and only faintly kneading as she drifted off with Tom stroking her back. It was the first time Sue had claimed contact with one of these spirits and London had not also been reacting. Maybe she liked this one?

Sue drummed her fingers once on the desk and turned again to the shelf.
