Chapter 9

Edison

Edison sat at his desk, poring over a copy of Ghost Hunting for Complete Morons. He was hiding it in the dust jacket for A Tale of Two Cities, because he did not need to be seen reading a detailed manual on how to interact with dead people. That was how Margaret would end up with his job.

Ghost tours were encouraged on Starfall. Ghost stories were celebrated on Starfall. But people who held publicly funded positions spending their work time reading ghost books for morons? Not so much.

He’d wanted to visit Riley since he heard about the attempted break-in at Shaddow House, but he also didn’t want to crowd her. On her latest visit to the library to drop off an armful of E. M. Forster titles, Caroline assured him that Riley was just fine, more indignant at being woken up in the middle of the night than anything else.

So, although his anxiety was screaming at Edison to run to her porch and demand to see for himself that she was safe and sound, he’d kept his distance. Riley didn’t appreciate being treated like she was fragile, so instead, he read. He wanted to understand Riley’s strange new reality. He wanted to help Riley with her “job,” if he could. He wanted to hide this book from Riley, because she was walking through the nonfiction section towards his office, chatting with Kyle. His erstwhile volunteer was smiling at her, talking about something to do with the T-shirt he was wearing, depicting a retro sci-fi series set in the 1980s. He hadn’t seen Kyle grin like that in months. Riley had that ability to coax the smiles out of people. Unless, of course, there was a ferry involved.

Edison shoved the ghost hunting book under a pile of papers.

“A lovely lady to see you, boss,” Kyle announced, teasing him.

Edison could only stare and stack more papers on top of his embarrassing book.

“I’m sorry he’s so socially awkward,” Kyle told her. “If you want to keep talking about Upside Down theories, I will be in the fiction section.”

Riley’s smile was radiant. “Nice to meet you, Kyle.”

“H-hi!” Edison finally sputtered. “What are you doing here?”

“I needed some books?” she suggested, her smile tilting at a teasing angle. “And a very helpful public official allowed me to manipulate the library card system to my advantage.”

“Don’t you have all the books?” Edison asked, tilting his fists under his chin with all the bright-eyed enthusiasm of a child being told a fairy tale. She threw her head back and cackled in the most charming way possible. He made it one of his life’s goals to make her laugh like that as often as he could. “I’ve heard the stories about Shaddow House’s library. Are they true?”

“That it’s big, cavernous, full of possibly haunted books?” she suggested, leaning across his desk so only he could hear. “Yes, all true.”

“You’re leaning awfully close over my desk, ma’am,” he noted. “Is this where you confess to your secret librarian fetish? I’ve run into that before.
