Chapter Eighteen

The kiss hadn’t been a ploy to get Morrigan on her side. Tamsin simply followed her instincts, and her desires, and damn it, she wasn’t sorry. If it also helped keep Morrigan in sync with her, well, how could that be wrong?

It all sounded good in her head, and it felt even better. At least until Morrigan dropped, as her mother would have said, like a hot rock. At least she’d been able to catch her before she landed hard on the ground. She’d folded with her to the earth to cushion her fall. Bad enough she blacked out. Didn’t need to add a concussion to the mix. Now she sat cradling Morrigan’s head in her lap.

Curls lay damp against Morrigan’s forehead, and Tamsin brushed them back. Her cool skin, a good sign. Whatever triggered the loss of consciousness, at least it wasn’t fueled by fire. That it had been preceded by her kissing Morrigan didn’t shine a very good light on her spontaneous acts of passion. First time she’d ever kissed a woman into oblivion. Couldn’t say she wanted to do that again either. It scared her because Morrigan lay so still, her chest barely rising and falling.

As she stroked Morrigan’s forehead, she wondered if her fear might be misplaced. As her fingers touched her skin, they tingled. Nothing normal about that and not something she’d ever encountered before, at least not until she’d met Morrigan. She pressed her lips against her forehead, and power rushed through her. “Grab the magic, beautiful,” she whispered.

Morrigan’s lashes fluttered, and suddenly, blue eyes stared up at her. “Well, that was fucking weird.”

Tamsin couldn’t help it. She laughed. “Try it from my side.”

She blinked several times. “What did you do to me?”

It didn’t escape Tamsin’s notice that Morrigan hadn’t tried to sit up and move her head from her lap. Okay by her. If the world wasn’t in jeopardy, she could sit here a month or two. “I kissed you.”

“Ah, yeah, you did. Do women usually faint when you kiss them?”

“You’re the first.”

“Lucky me.”

She brushed her fingers across Morrigan’s forehead. “Lucky you.” After a kiss on her head, she asked, “What happened?”

Now Morrigan did sit up and shifted until she looked at Tamsin. Her eyes were bright and full of life, not dull or confused like she might expect after a blackout. “It’s something about you and me.”

That part she understood. “I feel it too.”

“Beyond the attraction. I mean, neither one of us can deny the draw. It’s more than that though. Like in the air and in the ground. Lightning that strikes all around us each time we touch. When a kiss sends me to another realm, we’re talking about something I’ve never encountered before.”

That, she wasn’t expecting. That they were more powerful together didn’t come as a shock. From the first moment they’d met, the difference made itself known, but that it would send Morrigan’s spirit somewhere into the universe? A little shocking. “Tell me.” It had to be important, or it wouldn’t have happened.
