Jonathan hovered over a workbench that had been in the basement of the house since before his family had inherited the home. Old pickle jars containing various hardware hung above the table from a slab of wood by their nailed-in-place lids. One rattled as he unscrewed it to pour out an assortment of nuts and bolts to sort through.

He was killing time in a place he knew Natalie wouldn’t be likely to look for him while she enjoyed her evening with Bri. He knew she’d been disappointed that he had not allowed Bri to sense his presence earlier, but he’d been reluctant to share their secret. He feared that once Bri knew for sure he existed she’d want to send him on to the afterworld. He no longer wanted to go. He was in love, and the last thing he wanted was to leave Natalie behind.

He’d noticed the way she’d begun to bring her morning coffee up to her room to converse with him while she got ready for work instead of spending time with family members. He suspected she didn’t usually stay in her room every evening either.

He found a nut that fit on a screw and twisted the two together. Jonathan realized Natalie had a life to live. One that should include social activities, a walk on the beach, or frolicking in the snowy woodlands. Perhaps sitting outside a coffee shop watching tourists and reveling in a summer day. Things he had learned she enjoyed. Things a live boyfriend could do with her, while Jonathan couldn’t even leave the confines of the Brannigans’ two-acre property.

He grew tired of sorting the hardware and scraped it off the table into his hand to return to the jar. Once he replaced the container to its hanging position, Jonathan moved over to the bulkhead and floated through it to the backyard. A heavy blanket of snow lay over the landscaping like a dustcover keeping furniture clean, and he moved toward the gazebo his
