Chapter 15

Eileen

Mother Nature’s bridge? A series of large boulders were haphazardly placed in the middle of the creek that Nate and Eileen wanted to cross. She supposed someone could use the rocks as a bridge by jumping from one stone to the next across the flowing water. That’s what Nate appeared to believe.

He hopped lightly onto the first rock and turned to her. “Leenie, you’re going to be fine.”

She frowned at him. Perhaps in her twenties she would have been fine. But in her fifties, she was not so agile, and she didn’t have a desire to go for an icy swim.

Nate held out his hand. “I’ll help you. I won’t let you fall.”

Eileen had no intention of falling. She had magic on her side. She focused on the first rock and visualized her feet landing squarely on top in quick succession. She didn’t need Nate’s hand, because she chanted a spell in her head. Feet so light, they take flight. She floated over the rushing water to land softly on the boulder, next to Nate, and she smiled up at him.

His brow knit as he mumbled quietly enough that she almost didn’t hear him, “Of course you don’t need me.”

She hopped onto the next rock ahead of him as she wondered if her husband was angry because she’d used magic. Annoyance made her wrinkle her brow over the fact that Nate was irked by her use of witchcraft. She’d thought he was trying to accept her powers.

She made her way across the creek with Nate behind her, and when she finally reached solid ground on the other side, it occurred to her that her witchcraft might be the thing he’d like her to change. While he’d told her it wasn’t a problem, his actions said otherwise. Dread sank in her stomach like a stone. If that were so, she was going to have to find a way to give up using her powers in order to get him back home.

But could she? Eileen wondered. Witchcraft was so ingrained in her everyday life she couldn’t imagine not using it. Of course, she realized she could live a normal life like people without magic and be just fine. But for her, it would be like trying to use only one hand to do things, knowing the other was perfectly capable of helping.

“Isn’t this neat?” Nate asked after he’d walked them over to the rock formation that was used as a picnic area.

Eileen followed him, and she ran her hand over the smooth surface of the stone, letting her fingers feel the slight dips on the flat section of the boulder used as a table. She was as fascinated as he was by the way water could create such a thing. “It is.”

The clasp on the backpack clicked as Nate unlatched it and began to remove the food she’d packed. An insulated metal container thumped on the table. “I can’t remember the last time I had chili,” he said. “Is it spicy?”

“Very,” Eileen said, glad she’d remembered his love of spice correctly.
