CHAPTER 9

ORION FOLLOWED HIS employer through the casino and onto the private elevator, his eyes glued to the other man's broad, suit-clad back. Derek was wearing his favorite Desmond Merrion today, and the sharp, silver gray of the suit screamed power. It was almost funny how Derek thought he needed things like that to project who he was. Once upon a time, it had been his armor. Now it was his designer clothes. All of it was a waste. Any demon who looked at him and felt the noble blood thrumming running through his body would know Derek had enough power inside him to level the entire county. He was someone to be treated with respect. When Derek pulled him from his own personal hell and brought him to this world, Orion vowed he would serve him the way a real vassal should. The way he should have been allowed to serve his previous master. And yet, even after all these centuries, Orion still managed to disappoint him at every turn.

They hadn't spoken since leaving the clinic, and the silence was alive with unsaid things. The glossy elevator doors slid open, revealing the private quarters, and Derek strode out, his steps even, his posture composed, as confident of his power and control as always. He headed toward the office, and Orion followed, forcing himself not to drag his feet.

He knew he was lucky to be alive. After all the centuries his master had spent watching Troya, hoping that one day her memory would return—that his demigoddess lover would finally return to him—that Orion had lost control of his primitive nature, that he had dared to feed from her, even drawing the tiny slip of power he had, was unforgivable. Especially when Derek couldn't seem to get near her without inciting a murderous rage in the woman.

Derek sank into the leather office chair at his desk and glanced up at Orion, his expression unreadable. “Close the door, please.”

Orion did as he was told, fighting down the memories that tried to flood his mind—memories of what happened when a lower demon displeased their master. It had been so long ago now, but still, sometimes the memories seemed days old, rather than centuries. The smell of his own blood and burnt flesh seemed to clog his airways for a moment, and he had to remind himself he was clothed, not naked on the cold stone floor of his previous master's bedroom, wishing he could just die.

“Orion?” Derek's voice broke through the haze of fear. “Whiskey?” The taller man held out the decanter and gave it a shake, sloshing the gold liquid in question, one tumblerful on his desk already, and an empty tumbler waiting in his hand.

Orion released a measured breath and nodded, forcing himself to stay firmly in the present. Crossing the room, he took the whiskey glass from his employer. When Derek refused to release the glass, Orion met his dark eyes.

“How many times do I have to tell you I'm
