Chapter

Seventeen

Alessandra slid into the driver's seat of her little car, rolling down her window as Julian seated himself beside her. The little bug didn't have air conditioning, and the heat had built up inside, making her gasp for air.

“Well! That took longer than expected.”

“Anytime the police are involved, it takes longer,” he agreed, rolling down the window on his side. A slight movement of his fingers, and a cool breeze stirred the air in the small car.

“Having you around has its advantages.” Alessandra gave him a pert smile, putting the car into gear and pulling out of the parking space. “Was that Djinn magic, or your own?”

“My own. I try not to use the Djinn magic, unless wishes are involved of course. It has... repercussions.”

She glanced sideways at him. “That sounds ominous.”

“It's not fun,” Julian admitted. A smile curved his lips. “That man is not going to be happy with you when the police arrive on his doorstep.”

A pleased smile curved Alessandra's lips. “No, he's not, is he? Nor is Pop, when Robert reports it to him. Speaking of Robert....” She shot him a look as she came to a halt in the slow-moving traffic heading into the city. “A Great Dane? In my spare bedroom?”

Biting back a smile, Julian nodded solemnly, although his eyes were dancing. “I couldn't have him tearing up your house, or scratching your polished wood floors with his nails.”

“I appreciate that. Where is he now?”

He rubbed his nose thoughtfully, glancing sideways at her. “Let's just say... he's not inside your house.” Deftly he changed the subject. “I was thinking, let's go to my place first, then Whimsies. Since I've been out of touch, I'd like to be caught up on some things before tackling Jackson, and my computer's in the penthouse. I left it behind when I was called into my bottle. I'd like to set it up in your spare bedroom, if you have no objection.”

“What, no Internet connection in genie bottles?” she teased.

His rich chuckle filled the tiny car. “Not yet. I can summon books and papers and so forth to study, journals to peruse. But my contact with the outside world is limited to that. The Djinn, of course, can see anything they wish in the walls of their vessels. The Djinn vessels are of silver or brass, and the walls become fluid, allowing them to see what they choose projected there. Jacinth, for instance, likes to watch old television shows.”

“Jacinth?”

Julian’s face softened with affection, smiling slightly. “Ah. How to explain Jacinth. When I was first spellbound, the Djinn Council assigned Jacinth to help me learn to use my new Djinn powers, to teach me the rules of the Djinn and to be sure I did not overstep my boundaries. She was there, too, when I went beyond the rules of my own spellbinding, which are different than those laws governing the Djinn. She helped me to deal with everything, to cope with this existence all these centuries. I truly do not know how I would have survived without Jacinth.
