Chapter 14

William clicked his fingers, and two orbs of magical light scooted from his palm, twisted around his body, and appeared over our heads like light globes. They illuminated the tunnel with a golden glow. Old and stone, it evoked a set of catacombs under an ancient city like Paris.

There were tunnels under Fairbridge?

The stone was a deep alluvial brown, and damp had gathered over the centuries, forcing the floor to half crumble into dirt.

The musty smell grabbed my nostrils and tried to bury them.

Something else would bury me first.

The larger stalker screamed. William grabbed me, and we ran.

And we ran. And we ran. This felt exactly like last night when I sprinted back to the Enforcement Office. I couldn’t glimpse behind – couldn’t waste the energy.

I could look at William at least as his face stiffened with concentration. His eyes didn’t dart toward me once. He wouldn’t waste his energy. He knew I was there – his tight fingers wouldn’t let me fall behind.

I heard the massive stalker scream again, its throbbing shout pounding through the tunnel.

I finally found my breath. “What the hell is that thing? It’s bigger than an ordinary stalker—” I didn’t insert into the conversation I knew that because I defeated one a few minutes ago.

William didn’t answer.

We reached a T-intersection in the tunnel, and he didn’t pause. With one sniff, he headed to the left.

I heard the stalker, but the more we ran, the further we put it behind us.

William didn’t turn to me or slow down for what felt like 15 minutes.

You knew I didn’t run frequently – two blocks of exercise last night made my muscles burn like pork ribs on a barbecue.

Something must’ve changed, or adrenaline must be pumping through my body so fast that it didn’t matter anymore. I didn’t notice my muscles – just William as he slowed.

He kept walking briskly but no longer yanked me along like a husky to a sleigh.

With another step, he paused.

His hand still over mine protectively, he arched his head around. He half closed his eyes, appeared to taste the air with a quick move of his open mouth, then relaxed. As much as William could ever relax. His shoulders didn’t drop. He didn’t sigh. He simply no longer looked like a cocked weapon by my face.

“… William? What was that thing, and why couldn’t you defeat it?” My voice tightened with every terrified word. Though it sounded stupid, I’d never thought there were things out there William couldn’t defeat. With his powerful form, ancestral magic, and the Enforcement Office behind him, he should be unstoppable.

… But if he was unstoppable, the warden wouldn’t exist, right?

Unless he had a soft spot for her.

That jealous thought rose from nowhere. I crammed it back down, boarded it over, and tried to ignore it forever.

William didn’t pant. As for me, I almost collapsed onto my knees as I realized how hard I’d run then doubled over as I gasped.

I kept my eyes on him the entire time.
