Chapter 6
Early the next morning, Fiona paced her living room, which required exactly four steps in each direction. Movement seemed to help settle her nerves. The nervous energy felt an awful lot like fear, and she hated that. Then again, it was Halloween, a day designed for fear. She couldnât help wondering what the killer would have in mind for her today. Had he already claimed another victim?
Greg had been a perfect gentleman, sleeping on the couch, though it didnât exactly fit his tall frame. Heâd been so exhausted that heâd crashed shortly after dinner. It made her feel safe to have him there, looking out for her. And after heâd opened up to her a little, sheâd felt closer to him.
Still, she hated needing anyone, even the sexy detective. Most of all, she hated that she wanted him. She wasnât about to invite him into her bed when she wasnât sure what kind of response sheâd get. Open herself up to rejection again? No, thank you. Heâd have to make the next move. Unfortunately, she wasnât the patient type and a methodical man like Greg moved slowly, cautiously. Then again, heâd stroked her cheek to wake her this morning. Sheâd been ordered not to leave her apartment until he returned from his errand, even to go downstairs to her workroom or the gallery. And so, she paced. Did the man not understand how much work she had to do for tonightâs event?
Glancing out the window, she spied the car of the off-duty friend Greg had mentioned. The officer was standing guard while Greg was gone.
A knock on her door made her jump. Greg had her key, so who was knocking? Tentatively, she moved to the door and looked through the peephole. The face of her handsome, sexy detective was outlined there. She hurried to open the door and had to restrain herself from jumping on him like an eager puppy.
âDid you forget your key?â she asked.
âYour key, and I didnât want to assume I should use it again. Besides, I figured youâd be awake by the time I got back and might be dressing or something.â A slight flush reddened his cheeks. âAny contact from the killer?â
Instinctively, her hand went to her pocket, where her phone was silent. âNo. If he had, I would have contacted you right away, as per your instructions.â
âI appreciate you following the safety protocol, both on that and on staying here while I was gone.â
âBetter safe than sorry, but now that youâre back, I have a show to put on.â She was about to push past him and head down the stairs to the gallery when he took her hand.
âRelax. Alyssa just arrived and Iâve got reinforcements coming.â
âReinforcements?â
âVanessaââ
She planted her hands on her hips. âTell me you did not bother a woman whoâs expected to give birth at any moment and is supposed to be taking it easy.â The thought of her partner toddling down here to set up dozens of pieces of artâmany of them heavy or awkward to liftâhorrified her.
