Chapter

Eighteen

“Lady Prys and John Donovan still elude us after being photographed leaving the studio together. It seems the matchmaker has stolen this prize from hopeful Legacy contenders for herself.” —From The Hex Report

Dread pooled in Prys’s gut, dragging her down, down, down from the extreme high she’d reached with orgasm. Bren’s accusation had her reeling, unwilling to believe whoever had fired a shot on set, had sent death threats, had left those horrible “witches burn” messages could be a Senator. What happened to old-school poisons and potions?

John gave her a confused look. “Your guardian? You’re an all-powerful Bane. Why would you of all people have needed a guardian?”

“Long story.” She hedged rather than explain her mother hadn’t wanted her around until she was an older, more useful heir. Even then, more often than not, her mum still didn’t want her on the same continent. But no way would Prys be revealing that family secret so soon after disclosing a tiny fraction of her true magical ability. He’d seemed captivated with her powers, but he might be less enamored with knowing her own mother had shipped her an ocean away.

“Give me the short version.” He sounded grumpy, but he tucked her hair behind her ear so gently she couldn’t be angry or even irritated.

“I attended prep school in the States where I lived with Senator Sandinghan, the only suitable guardian according to my mum.”

Bren laughed a bitter, hollow chuckle, not sounding amused in the slightest. “You mean your mother needed someone to watch after her kids, so she shipped your brothers to boarding schools and hid you with my mom, who’s so far down the political power chain that people forget to invite us to Senate stuff.”

“Don’t say that.” Prys’s earlier sick feeling doubled down, making her feel oh so heavy despite being cuddled against a muscled chest as if she weighed nothing. “No one has forgotten you. I’m sure you’ll be included in Senate meetings once proceedings come back.”

“Thanks for the reminder, bestie.” Bren didn’t sound at all happy about her reassurance. “Guess I’m valuable now that so many Senators and heirs died in the demon battle.”

Bollocks, Prys had bungled everything. “No, I didn’t mean—”

“How old were you?” John asked, cutting off her stumbling apology, which didn’t matter all that much when she wasn’t sure what to say. “When you lived with Sandinghan?”

“I arrived at six and didn’t leave for university until seventeen.” Which had nothing to do with apologizing to Bren.

But John wouldn’t let the matter go. “You were just a kid.”

Now what had made him angry? Perhaps sullen was his go-to expression along with arrogance. Such a Legacy son when he not playing the Dominant. Or perhaps the broody, cocky look went with the part. Gods, she needed to get this discussion back on track before emotions spilled out. Ones that weren’t happy. Ones that would be less princess, more venomous viper.

“You were only a few years older than my niece,” he said, still peevish.

Since there hadn’t been a question, she wouldn’t give His Grumpiness any answer.
