Dani felt like she won a million tax-free dollars! Today marked the first week in months without any side effects. Fresh juice and whole foods were becoming fast favorites for her. Nothing and no one could convince her, her natural path to healing cancer didn’t work. Ladies she met and talked with in the area following Ms. Lauriette’s program looked strong. One woman diagnosed in stage four with her cancer. Given a month to live at most, that woman followed the natural diet, came off the medications, and was celebrating her tenth year of remission. Those doctors were clueless she asked to monitor her while she changed her eating habits.

This was the first time since she began her six-month checkups that she had to have a follow-up. Jenessa had been unable to tell her what happened after her eighteen-month check. Ever since she remarried, Dani didn’t feel comfortable taking her friends free time. They could talk about it when they met to discuss how they could better support Vivian. The nurse opened the door to the conference room. Dr. Thompson sat at the head of a table. Next to Dr. Thompson sat Dr. Salome.

The happiness Dani felt thinking about revealing her new course of treatment seeped out of the room. Dread crept up her leg and settled in the pit of her stomach. “Good afternoon, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Salome. How are you all today?”

Dr. Thompson nodded.

“How are you, Danielle?” Dr. Salome motioned for her to sit across from them.

Dani chuckled. “I don’t know. You tell me.”

Dr. Thompson cleared his throat.

“We wanted to discuss the results of your most recent blood test. We found elevated AMAS levels that indicate the cancer though undetectable before has increased and returned. We looked over your screens and didn’t see anything in the breast area and need to run more tests before we know exactly where it is now.” Dr. Salome said.

Ice-cold fingers wrapped around her heart, squeezing out the small bit of hope and happiness she felt. Her breathing grew labored. She felt like her heart would beat out of her chest. “There has to be some kind of mistake.”

“The false positive rate is one percent. We can run a second test, but I doubt it will say anything different.” Dr. Salome looked at the papers in front of him.

“You’re young, Dani. You take good care of yourself. There is a new experimental treatment and we believe you're a great candidate for it. One of the requirements is a partial or full hysterectomy. No guarantees but lots of promise.” Dr. Thompson raised his eyebrows.

Dani stood up and paced the floor. “You’re offering me the opportunity to volunteer to be a guinea pig. These treatments have already robbed me of any chance to have a healthy child and now you want to remove everything. I’ve read the stories. Women have gone on to have healthy, beautiful babies after breast cancer. Yet you want me to continue to allow you to dictate my future and take my womb.
