Chapter 17

Ryan

When the sun drops low in the sky, the sweet scent of Georgia approaching touches my nose and I quickly get up from the bolder and turn to face the treeline. Ethan lifts his head just as she and Scarlett emerge.

"How'd it go?" I ask hopefully, searching Georgia's face and emotions for any sign she's made progress bonding with her wolf.

She gives me a weak smile. "Still more human than wolf at this point."

"It'll happen soon enough," I say, wanting desperately to take her in my arms and comfort her, but knowing the time isn't right for that, either.

Instead, I gesture to Ethan standing beside me. "Georgia, this is Ethan, one of my most trusted friends here. He knows about our situation."

I watch as Georgia studies Ethan with curiosity. He's a couple years younger than me, with warm brown skin, intense dark eyes, and muscles evident beneath his shirt. Powerful energy seems to radiate from him. He inclines his head politely.

"Nice to meet you, Georgia. Ryan's told me a lot about you," he says in his deep voice.

"That must have been horribly boring for you," Georgia jokes, shifting her weight awkwardly. Her voice sounds strained compared to Ethan's calm baritone, and I can sense she's holding back both pain and confusion.

I turn and pick up something I was working on to pass the time, holding it out to her. "For you."

"A walking stick?" Her eyes light up as she takes it from my grip.

"I can sand it down to make it all smooth for you," I say, pleased when she immediately tests it out. "But for now, I thought it might help you feel a little steadier on your feet."

She looks up at me, beaming like I just gave her diamonds and not a chunk of wood. "Thank you, Ryan. I love it."

"We should get back before dark," Ethan says, scanning our surrounds before glancing up at the sky toward the setting sun.

"What happens after dark?" Georgia asks, taking a tentative step with the stick as her support. "Don't tell me vampires exist, too." She's saying it as a joke, but I can see the fear behind her eyes.

Ethan chuckles. "Vampires don't—"

His words get cut off with an oomph when Scarlett stomps on his toes to silence him. "It’s the mosquitos," she says quickly. "They can get pretty bad at this time of year, so we like to head indoors so those little blood suckers don't eat us alive." It's a bald-faced lie, but I appreciate Scarlett's quick thinking to protect Georgia's innocence. The knowledge of shifters is more than enough for her to come to terms with right now. We'll save introducing her to the ins and outs of the supernatural world for when she's more settled. Besides, as Ethan was about to boldly proclaim—vampires don't live anywhere near shifters. We don't mix.

As we make our way back to the cabin, Scarlett and Ethan take point while Georgia and I walk behind in comfortable silence. There's a lot
