CHAPTER EIGHT

Mr. Brooks drives like a maniac. I hold on to the seatbelt and pray we make it back to Loverfield Manor in one piece. I took my life into my own hands to retrieve the package containing the new wallpaper samples for the dining room. From now on, I’ll ask the older man to pick up my orders for me while I stay at the manor.

The living room is slowly coming along. Painters finished the walls yesterday before the installers came this morning to lay the dark, hardwood flooring. Val will be returning tomorrow night, and I want to make sure he’s impressed with the progress we’ve made.

The only hold-up is the furniture. The manufacturer is behind schedule, so it won’t be ready for ten days. I rearranged my plans to make up for the delay. Next week, I’ll start the dining room while waiting for it to arrive.

After Val left, I had a hard time sleeping. Between the isolation and the loneliness, I spent a couple of nights staring at the ceiling. Nightly runs through the woods combined with several laps in the swimming pool are helping, but I’m still struggling. When I manage to fall asleep, steamy fantasies involving my boss fill my dreams. My cougar is pissed at me, and I have no idea why. She growls and ignores me when I try to figure it out. The craziest sensation hits me every time I think about completing the job and returning home. I wonder if I’m losing my mind. Working myself to exhaustion is helping, but I’m still a little grumpy.

A tingle runs down my spine when we pull up in front of the mansion. My cougar wakes up and stretches under my skin, shocking me. I reach into the back seat for my package, but Mr. Brooks shoos me away and insists on carrying the box inside. My nose perks up the second I walk through the door.

Hunger slices through me as I notice Val at the top of the stairs. What in the world? Intense desire overwhelms me. Swallowing, I resist my cougar when she fights to take control of the situation. “Mine,” she hisses, causing me to gasp. Holy cow. My cougar is attempting to claim my boss. I rub the side of my head and wonder if I’m dreaming when Val rushes over and leans down to kiss my cheek. Up until this moment, his friendly gesture hasn’t affected me like this. My pulse shoots into overdrive as the urge to jump his bones heats my blood.

“Hello,” I manage to mumble. The unusual emotion that’s been teasing me since we met hits me full force.

“I’ll take your package into the office,” Mr. Brooks interrupts the tension radiating throughout the room before hurrying away.

“Thank you, Mr. Brooks,” Val growls. “Please make sure we aren’t disturbed.”

He reaches for my hand and brings it to his lips. “I’ve waited for you for centuries,” he growls before lifting me against his chest. My cougar purrs loudly around us.
