Katie also introduced me to the work of Viktor Frankl. Between 1942 and 1945, Frankl spent time in four different Nazi concentration camps. As an inmate, he spent those years enduring atrocious suffering, and watching others suffer. The following year he wrote a book about those experiences, Man’s Search for Meaning, concluding that life always has meaning and purpose, even in the throes of intense suffering. Strange how such a hard book (and experience) laced with death and radical evil could hold hope, but such was his perspective.

We who lived in the concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. . . . In some way, suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning.48
