Chapter Nine
âYou sure are making a lot of noise,â Mick told Lorna a few minutes later.
She whirled around, inhaled deeply, then tried to ignore the feathering of butterflies hopelessly trapped in her stomach. But how could she ignore the effect this man had on her? Or the lasting impression his kiss had left in her heart and head?
She was certainly going to give it her best shot.
âFound them,â she said, holding up two big glass mixing bowls. âGot to get back to the restaurant.â
âJust hold on a minute,â he said, reaching out to catch her arm, as she tried to slip by.
From her spot at the stove, Rosie Lee cast them an amused look, then quickly brought her gaze back to the pork roast sheâd prepared for dinner.
But Lorna knew exactly what her friend was thinking. Not wanting to give Rosie Lee the satisfaction of witnessing one of her tirades, Lorna glanced down at Mickâs hand. âI have to get backââ
âOkay, then, Iâll walk with you.â
He took the bowls right out of her arms. âBusy night, huh?â
âAh, yes.â She had no choice but to start walking. âDonât you want to stay and sample Rosie Leeâs pork roast with lemon pepper?â
âSave me a bite, will you, Rosie Lee?â he said over his shoulder.
âOf course,â Rosie Lee answered. Lorna didnât miss the slight smile curving the womanâs lips.
âReally, Mick, I can carry those myself. Stay here and enjoy your dinner with the family.â
âIâd rather walk with you. Nice night, donât you think?â
Lorna decided he wasnât going to take no for an answer, so she had to be polite, at least. Sheâd tried really hard to avoid him these past few days, but it hadnât been easy. Heâd shown up at the restaurant every night, sitting there with a menu in front of him as his gaze followed her. Mick had become a loyal customer.
If she didnât at least talk to him, heâd probably spend another evening sampling way too much French cuisine. So she answered his question with politeness and grace, hoping those two attributes would hide her agitation and agony. âYes, itâs a bit warm, but nice. The gardens are looking much better, though, thanks to your crew.â
âYeah, the mudâs dried up and everything is getting back into shape. We talked with the landscaper earlier today. Heâs already getting new flowers in place. Seems to have a lot of nervous energy, that one.â
âJustin is a hard worker,â Lorna replied, glad to be talking about a safe, comfortable subject such as gardening. âAnd he has a major crush on Lacey.â
âOh, really?â
âTheyâve known each other for years, since we came here. But I donât think sheâs interested. Theyâre good friends, though.â
âYou Dorsette women tend to have a lot of men friends, I do believe.â
They were nearing the summerhouse now, which only made Lorna remember being there with him the other morning. She also remembered how sheâd lashed out at him. Obviously, he wasnât holding that against her anymore. But she didnât want to
