Chapter 10

Judy

Same Ol’ Thing

Against Poppa’s better judgment, I dressed myself and my son to go and visit Liyza today. It wasn’t the crime-infested neighborhood that he feared; it was the rising tensions with Zigzag. After complaining about how I needed to see her and check on her, he decided to let me go but under one condition: he and the gardener had to accompany me.

The man, Joseph, who did the gardening, followed close behind us in the SUV. Poppa let me drive the Acura as he sat in the back seat with his long legs tossed on top of the center console. I laughed as his Jordan slides twisted from side to side, as he caught a vibe to the music with the windows down. Below him, under the seat, were a few guns. They were literally under the seat. One would have to lift it to get to it.

“You like nice today,” I said to him, peeking through the middle rearview mirror. He looked like a regular hood nigga with a tank top under his white t-shirt and some gym shorts.

He nodded at me through the mirror. “That’s all you,” he replied with a smile and placed his attention back out of the window, watching our surroundings. “What’s the rush to see her?” he asked.

“She hasn’t been answering the phone.”

“I understand. Do you know anyone else over in these parts?”

“Of course, I grew up here. Liyza is just the only friend I have. It was a few girls in the group home that ain’t too much care for me, and the others didn’t notice me.”

“I don’t see how, with that big ass fro.”

I giggled. “I was teased about it. I’ve always loved a good fro, even when all the other girls my age rocked quick weaves and micro braids.”

“Micro braids seem like they take a while to put in.”

“They do. One of the reasons I never got them.”

“I love your fro, pretty girl. Specially when I’m hitting that ass from the back.”

“In front of Marty? Really?”

He blew me off. “Man, you act like he can understand us.”

“He’s repeating things now. I don’t want him repeating any of that.”

“Judy?”

“Yes?”

“Change the subject.” I could tell I had slightly annoyed him.

“Not trying to tell you how to be a father, but he said my name last night, so now that we know he can talk, we need to be mindful.” He grabbed the bridge of his nose and returned my stare in the mirror. “What?” I diverted my attention between the back seat and the road.

“Nothing.”

“What? Say it.”

“It’s nothing. Just stop talking to me about bullshit. I’m a grown man. I’ll speak how I please around whoever.” I opened my mouth to speak, but he stopped me. “If you’re still going on about that, we can turn this car around, and ain’t nobody leaving.”

I shook my head. “So much for all that shit you were talking last night about change.”

“What that mean?”

“You’re back to your ways today.”

“Because I refuse to let you speak to me like a child? I’m definitely changing for you, and you know that.
